Circumvesuvio Schedule

I am taking a day to go from Rome to Sorrento, and try to see some sights in between. I plan on eating lunch in Napoli, and possibly seeing one of the following: Ercolano, Pompeii, or the crater of Mt. Vesuvius......which is the best option?

Secondly, I was wondering how late these attractions stay open?

How late does the Circumvesuvio Train run?

I was also thinking about going from Rome directly to Sorrento.....drop my baggage off at my hotel. Then going to do the sight seeing.....that may be an option, so I won't have to tote along suitcases.

Any ideas?

Trains run from early morning to around midnight about twice hourly i believe.

Pompeii would be my choice is terms of getting there (Scavi station right at entrance) and substance. Vesuvius whole different experience but, like Ecolano (heraculeneum sp/) much close to Naples.
