My personal preference is the Amalfi Coast. The 5 Terre was pretty, but that's about all there is and it got boring for me pretty quickly. While the more popular cities on the Amalfi coast are pretty glitzy (think jet-setters), people forget that there are also a lot of really sweet small towns that don't get a lot of tourists--especially if you get up into the hills.
As others pointed out, Sorrento is not on the Amalfi Coast; it is bus tour central for the area south of Naples; and it is more foreign tourist impacted than the actual Amalfi Coast. It is good as a transport hub if you don't have a lot of time and plan a lot of day trips.

A few comments. Both areas are beautiful but they are very different. If you love to hike then CT is a great spot. The trails between the 5 villages offer spectacular views but some of the trails are quite a hike, literally. We were there in mid Sept and it did not seem over run to us. On the contrary we stayed in Corniglia and it seemed at times like we had the entire village to ourselves. There are some great small restaurants in some of the villages and the food was great.
As mentioned earlier Sorrento makes a great base for exploring the AC, Pompeii, Capri, etc. We actually really liked Sorrento, especially the old part of town. The AC, as advertised is spectacular. We loved Positano and Amalfi. Could easily have spent more time in Positano. We were on the AC in mid Sept also and this area seemed much more crowded to us than CT did. To me Positano seems like a great place to eat, shop, hang out and just enjoy the views.
We did take the ferry to Capri for a day and this was one of the highlights of our trip. Skip the Blue Grotto and take a 2-3 hour private boat tour with Wendy at Capri Whales. You will not regret this. They will take you into all of the other grottos where you can swim without the hordes of tourists that will certainly be at the BG. If you go to Capri we highly recommend this first thing when you get off the ferry.
You really can't go wrong with either choice. Good luck and have a great trip
