Cheap Train Travel from Salzburg-Vienna

I am planning a December trip to Munich and Austria. Part of that trip will include train travel from Munich-Salzburg and then Salzburg-Vienna, followed by Vienna back to Munich. I found fares from Munich to Salzburg on DB for 28 Euro, but the Salzburg-Vienna fare is 93 Euro one way. Is there some kind of deal I'm missing?

I was looking on www.bahn.de. But it seems like it may be cheaper to use bahn for the salzburg trip and oebb for salzburg to vienna. Will using 2 different companies complicate things greatly during travel?

Munich- Salzburg - you can buy a Bayern ticket - about 28 euro for up to 5 people traveling together-some restrictions- for travel after 9 Am on weekdays and regional trains only.
You can buy them at the station - no need for pre purchase.
A VorteilScard is an Austrian Rail discount card for those under 26 or seniors men over 65 women over 60.
One must fill out a form , supply a photo and ID. About 20 euro cost.Good for one year.
Provides discounts of up to 50 % for travel within Austria about 25 % outside Austria

If you fit criteria and do some extensive travel in Austria- it is worth the effort. It is effective from the date you buy it- they provide a paper certificate follow up later with a plastic card.

Hi min,

>Will using 2 different companies complicate things greatly during travel?<

Munich to Salzburg is on a German train.

Salzburg to Vienna is on an Austrian train.

You should expect to use two different companies.

Buy your ticket to Vienna when you arrive in Salzburg.

Hi; Is there any chance of flying into Vienna and out of Munich? You will save about four or five hours on the train when you 'backtrack', Vienna to Munich. iris1745/dick

Hi min,

Not sure I agree 100% with ira here. If you're going all the way from Vienna to Munich you would not be changing trains in Salzburg, and not switching from an Austrian train to a German train.

You can take one train from Munich all the way to Salzburg and on to Vienna. It may be a German or an Austrian train. Conductors would change at Salzburg, so you are definitely dealing with 2 different companies even if you never leave your seat.

J6 has a good point.

You can buy your ticket from Munich to Salzburg from www.bahn.de.

Buy your ticket from Salzburg to Vienna and Vienna to Munich when you arrive in Salzburg, if the Bahn.de price is too high.

www.oebb.at has S/V for 44E and V/M for 59E.

Hi; Have you tried www.AirBerlin.com Depending on your day of departure, they have flights for as little as 29euro, one way, non-stop. If you consider flying, try www.kayak.com first and then Air Berlin. iris1745/dick
