Here's what I did for the changing of the guard. I was with someone who wanted to take a 1/2 day bus tour (she was sick of me walking her feet off - LOL - and made me get on the bus, which I would not normally do in a city). The tour guide on the bus took us this route for the changing of the guard and it proved to be a good way to view the sight w/o spending a lot of time.

This is what I have in my trip report:

"For the Changing of the Guard we began on Marlbrough Road near the Queen's Chapel and saw the beginning of the procession where the guard gathers. We then walked up the Mall and stood to the left of Buckingham Palace along the road. The Guards pass very close down the center of the road so this was a great vantage point. Most people were congregating in front of the Palace which wasn't as good a position."

You'll get a good front shot of the Guard as they face the road and begin their march. Then walk quickly toward the palace and be on the left side of the building, as you face it. You'll get another good shot of the front of the Guard parade and then as they move away from you toward the Palace you'll get an interesting shot of the back of the Guard and the palace in the background. Then try to move to the center of the Palace since on the left you can't see what happens in the courtyard.

It wasn't all that exciting but if you've always dreamed of seeing this then you should definitely try to do it. It will take maybe an hour, if you time it right.

I personally thought the Ceremony of the Keys was much more exciting and interesting.
