Changes in Speed limit from Jan 19th Ireland
The speed limit in Ireland will be changing over to km / hour on the 19th Jan 05. The speed limit on national roads will be 100km/hr ( 62.5 miles/hour) and on secondary roads 80km/hour ( 50 mile/hour).
All road signs are changing over to km

It may vary so watch the signs for the limit to avoid any tickets. It can change quickly and there was a spot in Lucan outside Dublin where it went immediately to 50mph and everyone got tickets for a while as the cops were out with the speed cameras as they knew most did not notice the sign.

This posting reminded me that during two weeks in Ireland last September we saw police on traffic duty once -- and that was enroute to Shannon airport from Bunratty. They were doing a traffic check, stopping cars to look at drivers' licenses.
My impression is likely incorrect, but it appeared speed limits were not enforced. For the most part, it was difficult to achieve the speed limit.
(The next Fodorite to get an Irish speeding ticket will remember this, no doubt...)
