Then they fly to Barcelona for a few days and from there head off to the rest of the countries via train. Is there an advantage of buying the SIM card in a particular country?

It's easier to buy the SIM in Dublin. You always have an "native" English helpdesk and webpage AND
the "passport" option costs 99ct in Spain and only 79ct in Ireland.
Other than that, you could check, if it's cheaper to reach an Irish mobile phone number or a Spanish one from your location. I bet it's Irish..

75ct per call would be with a German Vodafone SIM. Obviously the "passport" option has slightly different prices in different European countries.

logos-Thanks again. Seems Ireland will work best. I am not too worried about my cost calling her because I doubt we will speak that much. Email is fine for me. When my older DD was in Europe a few years ago, she was gone for 3 months. We meet up with her in London. I think the only time I spoke to her on the phone was once in the London airport and maybe one other time.

I looked at the vodaphone Irish website and it looks pretty clear except for one thing. Can she buy just the SIM card from them and put that in her unlocked AT&T phone? That would save her the money of buying a phone there. Or should she just buy a prepaid phone. She will take her old razor phone which is not the one she is currently using. So if it doesn't work, she can just toss it.

No problem, she has to check first, if the phone has at least the 900 Mhz band, the razr V3 should have both, the 900 and 1800 mhz as needed ouside the US. The razr does have a menu, where you can switch between "Europe/Asia" and "Americas". At least mine has

The manual will tell too. If those frequencies aren't available on the phone, she will have to buy a new phone, rather cheap with the card.

The RAZR will only work in Europe if it uses a SIM chip (only AT&T and T-Mobile use the European technology - called GSM - in the US).

The sim costs 30 &euro; with 10&euro; calling credit, and outgoing calls cost 45 US cents per minute. Incoming calls are free in most European countries, and you have to make a call once every nine months (better check this) to keep both sims alive indefinitely.
