We proclaimed that our taxi drivers were the most interesting characters of our 2002 vacation.

The best story was told by the driver who had to take his MASSIVE male German Shepherd to work that day since his female had given birth the night before and "mom" was very protective of the new litter!

We always just join the taxi Parisien queue at CDG. Last trip in May fare was €42 including the bags to our hotel in the 9th; return fare from the 7th was €46. In our experience, taxi drivers have always used the same routes, except returning to CDG this last time when the Champs Elysees was closed for a movie shoot.

For fabulous maps, go to www.pagesjaunes.fr and enter the name of your hotel (nom) and Paris (localite), then click on "plan" for a map. When you click on the printer icon, you'll have a "neat and tidy" map along with the name of the hotel, the address, and the phone number. (Handy for getting "home" by taxi as well, and for maps of other destinations you may be visiting.)

If you have a PDA, you can download these maps to it.

You can also click on the flag for the English version of the website (though it has fewer features).

I've never had a dishonest Parisian taxi driver yet (and I hope I never do). One guy I knew the general direction of how to get to the hotel, but he exited too soon. He kept driving through the 9th and we had to be in the 7th and I thought he was adding extra mileage. Poor taxi driver was really lost! He was driving a Mercedes and had to consult the navigation system map. The fare was still the same as if he hadn't gotten lost however!

I've never had a dishonest one, either. A couple that I had to keep honest...
