Car return in Florence

Where would you recommend returning a rental car in Florence? We will be in Siena with a car and then going on to Florence. From there we can take the train to Rome so we'd like to drop off the car before staying in Florence. It seems to make sense to drop off the car in the city, but will that be too much trouble? And where in the city. There are a number of options. Thanks for any suggestions!

We rented from the Hertz location near the train station and had no trouble getting into and out of the city. All you need is a good map and directions. I should say though that we live in NYC, so city driving is what we are used to.

ira - our B&B in Florence also suggested taking the bus from Siena. However, we were thinking that we could drive through Tuscany and sightsee before arriving in Florence. However, the bus may still be an option.

mw - thanks! After growing up in the NYC area and living in Boston, city driving isn't a problem.

We dropped our rental off in downtown Florence, close to the train station. It was a little confusing because many of the streets are one way, and you might need to do a lot of looping around. However it's not too bad, especially if you arrive at a quiet time like Sunday morning.

Another oprion is to drop your car at the Florence airport, which is just a 10-15-minute cab ride from downtown Florence.

If you will be in Siena with a car, didn't you already drive in/around/through Tuscany?

Barbara, I have been trying to figure out the same thing. I would rather drop the car in Florence and was trying to find the easiest place to get to (coming from the south). I drive in Boston--so I'm hoping it can't be any worse. I'll be in Tuscany Oct.6-9th, how about you?

ljc - we'll be in Siena the 5th-11th and Florence 12th-15th. I'll look for your orange bandana and we can share Alitalia stories!

yes -and no. Although we'll be in Siena a week, my husband will be attending a conference a good part of the time and we may only have a couple of days to drive around. Then again, maybe I can get DH to skip some of the conference!
