Car rental strategy in Germany/Austria?

I will be leaving Salzburg on July 24th, ending up in Frankfurt on the 26th and would like a car for this period. The problem is to pick up a car in Salzburg and drop it in FRA is very expensive. I will be staying in Fuessen on the 24th and Rothenburg on the 25th, and it doesn't seem possible to pick up a car in Fuessen and drop it in FRA.

Would it possibly be cheaper to take the train from Salzburg to Munich and pick up a car there vs in Salzburg?

Thanks!

Thanks Bob, would the best bet be to take the train to Munich and rent from there or rent in Fuessen?

If you can get it in Fuessen then that is ideal. I did look at Autoeurope but did ont find a solution---call them at 1888-223-5555

German rental company Sixt has a branch in Freilassing, just over the border from Salzburg, about 5 miles away from the city centre. You can take a taxi there from Salzburg, or tram #24 will take you every 30 min in about 20 min.
I've just put in your dates, for one-way rental to Frankfurt, turnig in around 6 pm at the airport (FRA) on July 26th, and got a quote of around 121 euro for a compact, like VW Golf, with full insurance.
http://www.sixt.co.uk/ (quote is the same if you go on their German site)
