Ann:

Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can get away with a US card.

I've been checking most of the websites this year and the gap between manual and automatic seems to have widened substantially. For the 18 days I am looking at, the difference is anywhere between $250 and $350. Time to go with a manual.

Bill

10 days, 2 cars.

Thus far Dan Dooley comes out cheapest with:
Ford Mondeo/Toyota Avensis Automatic $450 ($90 cheaper than the cheapest Hertz deal)
Nissan Micra/Ford Fiesta Automatic $327.87 ($50 cheaper than the cheapest Hertz deal)

The prices on Budget's website were far more than both Dan Dooley & Hertz. I am going to call their 800 and see if they price match. If so, I guess my question is: Dan Dooley or Budget?

On our first visit to Ireland we rented in Shannon through Hertz. It was not a good experience. And, while we waited for 30 minutes for Hertz to bring us to the car pick-up office from the airport terminal, Dan Dooley came by every 5 minutes to pick up their customers. When we arrived at the rental office, they did not have the size car we had rented (big enough for 6 people).

On our second visit, also into Shannon, we booked through Dan Dooley. We had excellent service, a brand new car and the trip was perfect.

We're planning another trip this February. Needless to say, we'll be booking through Dan Dooley again.

You may wish to consult a good old-fashioned travel agent. We did, for our recently-completed trip to Ireland, and she found us a great deal with Budget that was substantially below anything offered on the web by any of the majors, American or European. She also was able to tell us that "Super CDW" could be purchased at pick-up for E6.5 per day, which reduced our liability to zero. This was a real plus, as although we had been warned about the narrow Irish roads, the experience was another reality (one wing-mirror, one hubcap in the first ten miles out of Cork Airport). You may find that this sort of information is available on the net; my advice is "read carefully"--it's always nice to have someone to talk to and to provide the answers to the questions that you may have. Incidentally, Budget was great, both at the pick-up in Cork and at the surrender at Shannon. We got first-class service and a decent car (if you consider a Nissan Micra Automatic a car). It was what we booked and what we got. Anything larger would, frankly, have commented adversely on my driving skills.

I'd go with Budget again, but I'd book it through a travel agency.
