Car rental in Orvieto

Hertz has an office there. Does anyone know if any other companies have cars available in Orvieto? (I know there are threads about this but all my search variations came up empty.) Thanks!

Try AutoEurope.com. We rented from Hertz last time and it was a nightmare.

Thanks, artlover, but I tried AutoEurope and several others. No Orvieto location. That's why I posted the question here. I feel the same way about Hertz, but do I have a choice?

I have done a research through an italian browser (virgilio.it) and it seems that in Orvieto there are not known rent a car names. What i found is:
GULLIVER (strada del Piano 6/a. FOr info [email protected]
MANGIAVACCHI DONATELLA (Vicolo Caccia 19. For info there is only a fax number: 0763-300240)

Marilyn, we dropped off an AutoEurope rental in Orvieto in October 2001. I just checked the AutoEurope site, and Orvieto IS a pick up/drop off option in the drop down window that displays their locations. So if you spoke with someone by phone, you may want to try again with another agent. Or go to the site and plug in your dates and see what happens.

Betsy:
I have seen the Auto Europe web site and I have seen also that Orvieto is in their list of locations but after several attempts in request their cars (even giving a 2004 date), the system didnt give me any answer or location in Orvieto.
Marylin, there is the possibility to contact them (auto europe)via email, so maybe they will be able to get you more info (especially updated location, maybe ther is no more drop off point in Orvieto.... who knows?
I have done a research also with Maggiore rent a car and with Thrifty, but I couldnt find anything else. Maybe you should stick to Hertz at this point since the alternatives are not that many....

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I tried the same thing as Batuffolina. AutoEurope wouldn't give me a car at the Orvieto location, regardless of date or type of car. I will call them tomorrow and see if they no longer have that location. I may, indeed, be stuck with Hertz. Or perhaps I will renew my acquaintance with Italian public transportation.

Batuffolina, it's very kind of you to research this for me.

Marilyn - Have you considered renting at TERNI instead? Only 50 mins from Rome. Or Spoleto ...

We returned an AutoEurope car in Orvieto last September. Easy drop off right by the train station.

We rented from Hertz out of Orvieto a few years ago and I concur with artlover. It was a nightmare. Its a very small office in a strip mall type place (not at the train station )and even though we had reserved a month in advance (and reconfirmed) when we arrived they had not one single car available. They said they would have to go to Rome to get one. It held our trip up by a day. I would find some alternative for sure.

Marilyn,
you have to CALL AutoEurope for Orvieto.
I tried the on-line thing and it does not work for orvieto.
Don't know why,
But I have always found AutoEurope easy to talk to by phone.
I am going through them, and will be dropping off our car in Orvieto at the Avis office.
P.S. we are dropping car off there on the 4 july,
do you want it?

What? I'm picking up a car from Autoeurope (Avis) in September and had no problem with their website.

Forgot to mention that our AutoEurope rental was through Avis. The Avis office where we dropped off is within easy walking distance of the train station (even with luggage) and the funicular up to the old section of the city.

Thanks all. I will talk to Avis and/or AutoEurope today. Our situation has a few peculiarities in that we will be in Orvieto for about a week, but only want the car for the last 3 days or so. Prior to that we will be otherwise occupied and don't need a car. If it's too much hassle we may just forget about the car.

Thanks for the offer, nanb, but we're arriving 5 days later. Any other fodorites going to be in Orvieto between July 9 and about the 16th?

Just to update this info, when I spoke with AutoEurope there was no problem. Apparently there is a 3-day minimum rental, so if you put in dates of July 14-16 on the website, for example, the system says "no deal".

Pricing was not great, but not as horrible as I expected -- about $50/day for a 3 or 4 day rental on the least expensive car, which included insurance etc. Didn't seem to be any extra to drop the car at the Rome airport.
