Car rental in London

Would like some advice on the best places with good rates for a car rental in London.
I need the car for one or two days for daytrips.
Thanks,
Mike

No matter who you rent from, you won't get terrific rates for single day or short rentals. The savings come with 7-day rentals.

Also, you will get MUCH better prices if you pre-book from the States rather than just walking up to a rental counter in London. Probably 30% cheaper pre-booked.

There is no one "best" or cheapest agency - all will vary depending on the size of car, pick-up/drop off location, auto vs stick, etc. Start by checking AutoEurope and then keep searching. I have used probably 8 or 9 different companies over the years in the UK because each rental period has resulted in a different "best" deal.

It usually takes me longer and more work to pin down a car deal than to get the best airfare.

Enterprise rent a car on line reservations were the best rates and best location. $90 (US) for two days. It beat all the other companies by a good amount.

I've found good rates at www.easycar.com a couple of times. I'm looking myself for a rental in April and I've just located one for GBP 66.84

Karen:

With Easycar be sure to read ALL the small print. They don't offer unlimited mileage, and charge very high rates after a very low mileage. They charge for cleaning, and are the centre of a current scandal about - well, let's say dilatoriness in returning deposits. And the consumer press tends to discover a new Easycar idiosyncracy about every two months

They do have some happy customers (not least because they use jolly funky cars). But don't assume this is just a cut-rate Hertz

the strategy we used was to rent & return our Car at Heathrow. this worked vy well and kept us (me) from driving in London. Also we used an AMEX card to save the cost of insurance. We used Hertz as I recall.
