Car Rental in France (Insurance + Add'l Driver Questions?)

Until about 4 years ago, only my wife drove the car in France. As a "precaution", I started recently listing myself as the second driver. Of the 10-12 subsequent cars we've rented - I think I sat in the driver's seat only twice. We are re-evaluating this.
