CAR RENTAL IN CRETE

WE PLAN TO RENT A CAR IN CHANIA, BUT WOULD LIKE TO DROP THE CAR IN IRAKLION FOR OUR FERRY DEPARTURE. DOES ANYONE HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH THIS...IS THERE A DROP CHARGE FOR DIFFERENT LOCATION? IS THIS POSSIBLE WITH CAR RENTAL COMPANIES IN CRETE?
Thanks for your response.

I can't help you with a specific recommendation for a rental company that would allow that, but I can say that in general many of the rental agencies are local businesses and don't have that service. You'll have to go with one of the national companies to get that. Here's a list of rental agencies you can contact to ask about dropoff.

It was quite a few years ago, but we did it and there was no drop charge. We rented from a local agency in Plakias called MB Auto Plakias. We dropped the car at the Iraklion airport where someone from the agency met us to drive the car back to Plakias.

We found a huge difference in rates between agencies at that time, so you might want to check around.

We rented through AutoEurope and picked the car up at the Chania airport and dropped it off in Iraklion; no extra fees as I remember.

Reread grandmere's post but this time replace her name with mine. I could make the exact same post.

To Michael...sorry about the shouting.

To others...thanks for your responses. We have a quote from Auto Europe, and they do mention a $30. (estimated) drop charge which would be payable locally. We're exploring some of the other local Cretan companies and I'll post when we've finalized our arrangements.

We rented in May from Avis since my husband gets very good corporate rates from them. Also they have a place in Iraklio so we were able to pick up the car there instead of having to go to the airport (we arrived by boat). There was a $30 or $35 drop-off fee. Also, the car rental prices from a Greek agent we used for some bookings (when they were cheaper than we could get on our own) and also had a drop off fee of 35 Euros; and Hertz was about $30 also. There may be other companies that won't charge a fee, but even if you have to pay it, it's worth the convenience.
