Car Rental: Day Trip Naples/Pompeii/Amalfi
Hi there,
We are doing a very quick trip to Italy in a few weeks with some younger family (20 somethings).
They've never been, and as such we'll spend most of our time in Rome.
We would like to add in a few day trips.....one of which to Naples and Pompeii.
I was thinking we could take the morning train from Rome to Naples, and after having lunch in the city, rent a car and drive to Pompeii, etc. We could turn the car back in later that day and take the train back to Rome.
Is this a very bad idea or could it work?
My fiancee loves to drive in foreign countries, so this satisfies his need for adventure of the road kind!
I thought this approach may allow us to move at our own pace and pull off the road if we wanted to.
What are your thoughts? If you've done something similar, what route would you recommend? Ideally, we'd love a route that shows some coastline and vesuvius.
Any thoughts you can offer are greatly appreciated!

Yes, it's a bad idea. You do not want to drive in Naples under any circumstances. The driving is crazy there, more so than other parts of Italy.
Train to Naples from Rome, switch to the local commuter train Circumvesuviana (lower level of Naples train station) and train to Pompeii (about 30 minutes from Naples and 2-3€). The train station (Pompeii Scavi) is across the street from the entrance.

Hi tip,
Ditto kyb.
If your fiance wants to drive in Italy, take the train to Orvieto. Have lunch in the garden at http://www.isetteconsoli.it/
Rent a car and drive around Umbria and Chianti.
Return car in Orvieto or Chiusi and train back to Rome, or drop the car in Siena and take the bus back to Rome. http://www.senabus.it/

Driving in Naples is not fun, enjoyable or pleasant. Not only are the drivers crazy there, but there are hardly any street signs, lots of confusing rotaries and roads that turn into other roads. After Rome why not enjoy enjoy the countryside which is beautiful and will be exploding with flowers?

I've driven into Napoli's airport and that's as far as I dared to go. Traffic in Napoli itself is insane and there's no way I would drive in that city. Do yourself a big favor and just take the Circumvesuviana from Napoli to Pompeii.
