Car pickup in Toulouse
mjoy on March 10, 10 at 6:39 a.m.
I need to pick up a car in Toulouse, preferrably in downtown Toulouse as opposed to the airport. It will be a Sunday and I know a lot of places open around 2 p.m. or are closed. Got in touch with Avis whom I would prefer to rent with because they have an office right by the train station in Toulouse and also the train station in Brive in the Dordorgne area where I will be dropping off the car.
Every time I call Avis, I get a different answer as to whether they are open on Sunday. There was one office on Rue Bayard (closer to our hotel but not near the train) that we were even told it did not exist or then another time that it was closed for the day. I know I can go to the airport, but this will be more time consuming being it will be going in the opposite direction of where we are heading (Cordes Sur Ciel), possible traffic and unfamiliarity with the area.
We need to get an automatic for comfortable driving which might make it a little more difficult, but right now I need to definitely know there will be a car waiting for us. I was trying to do this over the phone rather than the Internet. Thought then I could pay for it and get a voucher.
Any suggestions?

Instead of relying on the hours of a specific company, why not use AutoEurope which will tell you where the car can be picked up on Sunday? Chances are that if Avis is open on Sunday, so is Europcar. You might even get a better price. As far as Brive is concerned, I think that all rental agencies are near the train station.

I've rented Avis cars at the Toulouse airport several times and the one thing I would say is 'don't count on an automatic' unless you make very specific arrangements for one. I had to wait for my car while someone else went through all sorts of emotionas about 'they told me you'd probably have one available'.
I've always booked directly with the company as I get either AAA or AARP discounts so I don't know how AutoEurope works, but I don't know if they can make the arrangements to have an automatic transmission car re-positioned for your use...but they might know of another company (Budget?) which has more automatics available (trying to think positive, but automatics are not popular with the French...)
