I want to live in a Schengen country…does anyone know what are restrictions & rules about buying a car in one country when I live in another…BOTH in Schengen area.

Or will it depend on the country lived in?

You will have to import the vehicle into the country you are living in.
You will pay any extra taxes due on the vehicle, and probably it will have to undergo an inspection.
You will need to insure it in the country in which you are living.
You will also need a local driving licence if you are intending on living in that country for more than 6 months. That may involve taking a driving test, depending on where your current licence was issued.
Schengen has nothing at all to do with it.
When you have decided on the country in which you are going to live you can find out their rules for importing a vehicle on their government website.

I assume you will be getting any visa you require for living in a Schengen country.

I doubt if Schengen has anything to do with it, and even being an E.U. member may have little to do with it.

I know of more than one U.K. citizen who has a second home in France and has a car there which is registered and insured locally.

It may not be that straightforward to arrange, however. It would be interesting to know why you want to do this, which countries are involved (is Ukraine relevant?) and your own nationality.

charley, No UKR isn't involved. My reason is that we want to leave this crazy country as moving in & out for my (local) wife is just plain crazy. I'm an Aussie so no prob there. We could hire cars but being the independent so-and-so that I am, firstly I want a special car (brand/type), secondly I want my wheels to sit at the front door and we can go wherever - whenever. Independence so to speak. Besides, at my advancing years, in ten years it will become too difficult to get a licence and/or hire cars. As a driver of more than 60 years I want to squeeze that last bit of independence outa my life!

We've already checked out living permanently in Spain…shouldn't be overly difficult, especially after what we went through in UKR. What a DUMP!

I think Ukraine has a lot worse problems that being "a dump". How much research did you do before deciding to move there.

If you want a german car then perhaps if you contact the car company from whom you wish to buy the car they can provide info the procedures necessary for getting a car moved to Spain, local inspected, registered and insured and the requirements for getting a local license.
