We've all probably indugled in a "very touristy" thing at some time or other in our travels. And when I went to Positano for my 2nd visit in April '99, thought "what the heck", I'll check out the reknown Blue Grotto during a day trip to Capri. What a waste of time & money !!! Obviously, others had experiences more positive than mine. But in good conscience, I'll have to state "just say NO" to the GROTTO" !

OK Let's get this straight! THE BLUE GROTTO IS NATURE! It is not man made nor is it an amusement park ride! If you don't see it on your visit to Capri you will regret it for life. So there! It is a grotto and a gorgeous one, period. No hot dog stands, but maybe a lot of people outside waiting to get in. The amount of boats allowed in at a time is limited, so the charm of the interior is lovely.
If you day trip to Capri go very early and check the tides as you can't go in at high tide or if it is too rough. The entrance is small but it only takes a few seconds and the cavern is huge. The light in the water is sublme. Then go to Villa Verde in Capri for lunch in the garden. See Anacapri (go by bus with a day pass ticket for buses and funicular) and take the ski lift to the top of the mountain in Anacapri for a fabulous view.Walk walk walk and see the two gorgeous cathedrals. The tile floors in the Anacapri Cathedral are to die for. There, you did the tourist bit. Now stay overnight and see the rest! If you want charm in a hotel, we loved Hotel Mamela. It has huge rooms and a pool. Capri is great! Enjoy!

Although I couldn't get any photos of the Grotto itself...it is very dark inside...I do have a picture of the many boats waiting their turn to be serviced by rowboats....if you'd like to have a look. I also have many more shots of Italy online.

My experience is what some of the others above say. If you have the time, it's ok. But you really won't be missing anything if you skip it. I was also there in late September.

Italy pictures: http://www.jimtardio.com/italy.html

We went to Capri lasst year and all intentionsof seeing the blue grotto. Even though it was a beautiful day, they said it was too choppy to go out. I'm not sure how often one cannot go one the ride there either. Only those that saw the blue grotto answered your post. It is pretty common to not go out once there.
