I would suggest staying in Capri and visit Anacapri for a day visit. We stayed at the Villa Brunella last October and loved it. The owner is extremely helpful in assisting with any arrangements you need. The view is magnificent. The resturant is excellent. This was my favorite hotel during our visit to the Amalfi Coast.

We stayed at the Hotel Mamela (http://www.hotelmamela.com/)in May and loved it. It was right outside the main part of Capri Town so you felt a little secluded but not so far away from the "action." The rooms were large, views were wonderful, and the hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. We were glad we stayed in Capri Town rather than Anacapri- it seemed that Capri Town had more to see and do. One of our favorite memories is eating at Le Grotelle, a restaurant that is actually built into a cave with a terrace overlooking the cliffs and water. The food was great and the views made it really memorable!
BTW- We tried to get reservations at Villa Brunella too. We opted out b/c they did not have an ocean view room. We were really glad that we looked around for a room with a view- it really is worth it!

I'm also looking for a hotel in Capri.
I called Villa Brunella and the Man answering the phone sounded short and rude. He quoted me 350eu with no view.
Has anyone stayed at Nautilus Hotel?
I know its a three star but a friend reccomended it.
thanks,

Mimi,
I ditto Jane's suggestion for the Mamela, as a matter of fact I am leaving for Italy next week, and will be staying at the Mamela.I got an incredible internet deal 225euros for a sea view room, I will be there the last week in Sept.
When are you planning on being on Capri? I will be posting a detailed trip report in early Oct.
la dolce Capri, and best of luck

In July, we stayed at the Hotel Luna, which is only about a five minute walk from the main piazza. The hotel is set inside a beautiful garden and has a magnificent pool area with restaurant. Of course all of this comes with a fairly hefty price. Our superior double with a terrace overlooking the coast ran about $330/night. Quite honestly, it is expensive, but in this case, it was worth the price. The hotel, the staff, the grounds, etc. were all heavenly.
Good luck with your choice!

Thanks to everyone. It really helps to hear from people who have actually stayed at these places.
Fluffy, I, too, would be interested in knowing about the internet deal that you found. I cannot even find an email address for Mamela although I did find their website. Maybe I overlooked it.
Also, thanks for the restaurant suggestions. Happy travel to everyone!

Mimipam-
We went in May of this year and I think we booked Mamela in late Feb or early March with no issues. We had to call them directly, as we too could not find an email address for them. The owners were very friendly and I believe they faxed a confirmation back to us.
Joannelynn- there is a bus system on the island where you can go back and forth between Anacapri and Capri Town. They are rather small (not like the big commuter buses you may see in the US) and fill up quickly. We waited between 10 to 15 minutes between buses and it probably took about 15 minutes to get between towns. There are also lots of cabs but they are typically $10 to $15 versus a couple of bucks for a bus ticket. Walking, I don't think, is that great of an option since it is very hilly, the roads are very narrow with lots of twists and turns, and some of the roads didn't have sidewalks. But maybe there are other routes I don't know about.

Mimi- I got the deal back in Jan. of this year it was an internet promotion through didos.com(spl.?) if you can't find that site post a response.
We paid up front, normally that sort of freaks me out, but I've stayed at the Mamela before so I know the hotel/rooms are nice.
Good luck all...

JaneS -- yuo could take the Phonecian Steps from the end of the path that goes past Villa San Michelle to the marina and then take the funiculare up the hill. It is a breathtaking walk, but you also get an understanding how the Caprese did it many years ago. It was a wonderful experience.
