Some thoughts on Capri. La Grotelle, although it is built into a cliff does not serve diners in it; you eat on a patio below. The food was not very good, but OK. As for the Blue Grotto: it really is worth it; the color is not to be believed. But...you have to sit in the little motor boat outside the grotto with all the other boats until it is your turn. Bad fumes, queasyness in everyone, and even one person in my boat vomited. Unless you go very first thing in the morning, that wait is inevitible. But I loved loved loved Capri. Not the main streets, but all the small byways that lead off of it. Imagine: no cars! (except a few hotel put-puts and the Island emergency cars). As for fashion: don't even obsess about it because you probalby can't match the zillionaire 20-30 somethings who gather in the center of town, and when you are on one of your walks, no one is fashion conscious at all. We stayed in Capri three days and loved it (my husband hates heights so we skipped Anacapri-what a pity, but I love him).

My experience of the Blue Grotto was different. I didn't go there on a motor boat from Marina Grande but by bus (one Capri-Anacapri & one Anacapri-Blue Grotto). You then just walk down some steps and one of the little rowing boats which actually go inside the grotto comes & picks you up. You then wait your turn in that. So no motor boat and no queasiness involved. I didn't wait long buit did go quite early. I've done this twice & then spent the rest of the day at the quite nice beach club just across from the top of the steps.

I'll be staying at Villa Le Scale in Anacapri and I have a couple of questions for the experts:

Are there scooter rentals? and if so, is this a smart way to get around?

Capri seems like the perfect place to rent a boat and spend the day popping in and out of the coves, dropping anchor and swimming in the crystal clear water. Is this possible? or adviseable?

Thanks

altajoe,

There are scooter rentals available on the island. It's up to you to decide whether or not you think it's a good way to spend your money. I think most things are within walking distance on Anacapri, and there are plenty of buses/taxis to take you down to Capri and Marina Grande if you want to spend time on the lower half of the island.

With the way cars and buses pass back and forth on the cliffs between Anacapri and Capri, I personally wouldn't feel comfortable driving a teeny little scooter. If you are more adventurous, go for it!

There are also a ton of boat rental places in Marina Grande, and you can most certainly rent a boat for a day. It can get kind of costly, particularly depending on the kind of boat you choose, but there are lots of different companies and boats to choose from.

Nicole,

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess I'll have a few decisions to make.
