There are two seaside towns easily accessible from Athens
Chalkis - 80 km North of Athens
You can do day trips to Evia island
Nafplio - 150 km south of Athens
From Nafplio you can do day trips to Mycenae, Tiryns, Epidavros just to name a few)
Nafplio is the nicer of the two cities, but i like Chalkis as well

Hi
I stayed in Palaio Faliro. I wouldn't recommend it. Too busy and not particularly charming. It couldn't be labelled "a little seaside town" either!
There are other choices. This may help - http://www.travelinfo.gr/athens/beaches.htm

Palaio Faliro is a neighborhood of Athens located on the sea....
It is actually one of the nice and rather expensive areas to live as an Athenian.
The link that you posted is a map of the greater Athens area and not seaside towns near Athens..
Instead of Rafina, which I don't find particularly attractive for a stay that is linger than one night,
I would recommend Nea Makri, which is a little bit further away..

I live in Athens, in Palaio Faliro to be exact! Definitely not a seaside 'town', very much part of Athens as Clausar says.
You don't say how long you want to go to this seaside town for? Is it a week or so, just a few days, or are you talking a day trip from Athens?
There are plenty of options, but if it's a quick visit & you don't want to travel far Varkiza is an option (public transport easy enough), but if you have a car & more time I would just do a route around the coast & maybe stay at a couple of different places that take your fancy.
I like Lavrio, some great fish places to eat & the site of Thorikos nearby too.

Lavrio is nice for a day trip, but there are no hotels there.
Nearby hotels are located at 5-12 km and would require a car.
There are several places located on the coastal road between Vouliagmeni and Sounio, but all of them are residentail areas, and the few hotels that are located on the beach, are more or less isolated....
Another seaside town would be Loutraki, at 80 km west of Athens, with a very long beach promenade, endless restaurants and cafes. Here are some pics :

Good points Clausar, public transport only does limit the options as you have to stay in a town.
Still, time of year & length of stay would help As would 'how near'? Depends what length of time they are prepared to spend on a bus.

I stayed in Nes Makri for a night. It is a nice sea side town. Parts are up scale and other parts are middle class. There are great beaches near by and great fish restaurants. We went there for a day and a half waiting for friends to arrive from Crete and the thought of athens in August was too much. swimming in the sea was so delightful.
