Camping in Croatia

My family was born in Croatia. I can tell for a fact that a majority of towns have "autocamps". The ones that I know of are all along the coast of Croatia and there are many signs posted along the roads properly marked. They have names and they advertise them. There is atleast one in every town. All you really need to do is say "Molim, di ye autokamp" (pardon, but where is the autokamp) and they'll direct you. But seriously-there are signs posted, you'll have no troubles. I have to say that I've never been to one (that's because I have houses there), but they are really nice. A majority of them are on the water (if you are ON the coast), under pine trees. Usually there is a cafe in the vicinity. One of my houses is on the beach and there is an autocamp on the otherside. There are some trailers, tents, etc. There are quite a few cafes. There are also many signs leading up to the autocamp and there is advertisement for it on the mainroad. The larger the autocamp, the more advertisement there is. Do you know in which cities you will be camping?

I returned from my Croatia trip about 3 weeks ago and as we were driving down the coast we were amazed at the fabulous locations for camping near the coastline. Croatia is gorgeous and the people are wonderful! I can't wait to go back!
Cheers!

My assumption is that you will be traveling down the Magistrala (which is the main road down the coast of the Adriatic) The only one of those towns that is not on the coast is Plitvice. I have an aunt that lives there (10min away) I've been there many times. During the summer it is very hot during the day, but during the night, it is quite comfortable. There should be an autocamp there. It is quite beautiful there. Click on my name and you'll see what I wrote about Rovinj. It's a beautiful town. I've been to Pula (my mom was born there). Along the Magistrala you will encounter many of those towns you mentioned as well as many autocamps that are right on the water.
Omisalj is a beautiful town to visit in Krk.
If you want to see PAG, while you are driving the Magistrala, you can take a boat (along with your car) and it will let you off on Pag. I forget which town you board the ship, but again, there are signs everywhere. If you choose that route, you can drive back to the Magistrala via Zadar or take the boat back to where you started from. If you are interested, I can find out the point of embarkation. Zadar has many advertised autocamps. This I know for sure. They advertise along the Magistrala. Feel free to ask me any questions. I am very familiar with all of Istria and upper Dalmatia.

Hi Travelling Sue,
Again thank you for e-mail. Please let me know the point of embarkation for Pag.
Do you have any personal reccomendations of things you must see/ do along the coast? Do know a good place to do some snorkling/diving?
Is split worth spending a couple od days in?
What about Trogir?
There seems to be so much to and do, it is difficult to decide what to do and where to go.
Thanks
Terry

I went to Split a long time ago and I did it in a day. I would spend a majority of my time in Dubrovnik. It just seems to be a great way to end your Croatian journey. Are you going to Bol in Hvar?
Check out this site for a little synopsis on some of the places you are going http://www.exasyachts.com/croatia_islands.htm
I don't know about diving. I never sought that out since I don't dive. However I can tell you that the water is pristine anywhere you go to snorkel. I especially like the beaches that you can jump off of cliffs into very deep water with the bottom of the ocean not in site. I can tell you that I've spotted Octopus and some species of fish.
Pag has such clean water because of the "Solan" which is the salt making facility. When you come out of the water in Pag, your skin will have white residue. Don't be Afraid! It is the cleanest, the clearest. You will see many boats parked in the many little coves of Pag. I absolutely love circling the islands with a boat. The best beaches are the ones that are difficult to get to on by foot.
The beaches are so diverse. Some are pure sand, some have small rocks, some have large rocks, others you must jump off of cliffs in order to get to the water (some are knee high cliffs, some are maybe 2 stories high, some are the height of a bridge) This is the beauty of it all.
I am not familiar with Trogir. The point of embarkation to Pag is Prizna (mainland) to Zigljan(Pag). Check here for ferryboat scheduling http://www.sunturist.hr/eng/prometvezeeng.asp I think most of your questions about Pag will be answered at this site http://otokpag.com/

Terry, I stayed in Trogir for a few days last month and absolutely loved it! You can take a day trip to Split from Trogir. If you decide on Trogir I would highly recommend staying at Apartmani Bakica. It is privately owned and the owners are very nice and accomodating. I would stay there again in a heart beat! Very nice clean rooms for a reasonable price.
