Before I got my quad band cellphone I used calling cards a lot in Europe.

The only place I remember not being able to use an ATT one, fvor some reason, was in Switzerland.

I suspect a lot of those prepaids will work in most western european countries

They will work but will be more expensive per minute to use than would a local phone card.

I should add that I think its usually a better deal to pick up a local calling card. Most gas station, tobacco stores and/or newsstands sell them.

Can the calling cards purchased at tobacco shops, etc. be used in hotels and apartments, or only at public telephones?

Calling cards: i would think that calling cards can be used in apts. etc. I was in Italy in March--had a Europa card, which is good for US, Europe and Canada. The hotel operator told me how to access the international operator and it worked great. I believe it was 5 euros for 300 or so minutes and good for 60 days from first use. Have used the Europa card on several trips in Europe. There has been discussion aabout calling cards oon this BB several times. Try a "search" for more information. Ciao!!mhm
