Mileage plus extras for luggage, extra people after 4 and on sundays. But, in general the fares are very reasonable and a good way to get around for several people and/or those who aren't good at walking longer distances.

(In Rome we either walk or taxi, bus is jus too big a PIA.)

Check out http://www.worldtaximeter.com/rome . I haven't used it for Rome, but it's pretty accurate for Paris when I've looked in the past.

Thanks, this is a great help and answers my question. We (3 of us) plan on taking a taxi to the furtherest site and walk our way back to our hotel at the Pantheon.

We just got home from Rome and found taxis very affordable BUT BEWARE: there seem to be two ways the taxis work. We flagged one taxi who was going to charge us a flat rate of 18Euro from the Collosseum to Piazza Navona. We told him he was insane! We got another taxi who said it was "by the meter" and it cost us 7 Euro. This happened another evening as well.
SO ALWAYS MAKE SURE THE TAXI IS USING THE METER BEFORE YOU EVEN GET INSIDE.

That probably wasn't an official taxi. You have to make sure you get in an official Rome taxi (Comune Roma on the side).

Taxi rates are on the city's website. Some things are set fees such as from FCO to Rome (48€ for 4 people including luggage).

Late nights can also have a higher start. Rates that are mileage can also charge extra for luggage or extra passengers. Here's the rates.

The set fees.
