Cadiz or Vejer de la Frontera?
Hello!
I am completing the itinerary of our trip to Andalusia next September and I am unsure about one section of the trip.
Here is our plan:
3 days in Granada (husband and I... the Alhambra is on my bucket list)
4 days in Malaga on the beach (meeting with friends, family and kids)
4 days in Gaucin to explore Ronda and white villages (with friends, family and kids)
Then, here is my question, (our friends are leaving, so it's back to me and my husband) :
We have just two nights (I know), before heading to Sevilla for 3 nights and one last night in Malaga before flying out.
Should we spend those two nights in Vejer de la Frontera, in Cadix, or one night in each?
Or another idea? The plan was to visit Tarifa/Gibraltar on our way from Gaucin to Vejer...
Our main interests are food, wine and music!
Thanks!

We stayed in Tarifa (just outside, actually, at the quite wonderful Hurricane Hotel) and did a day visit to Vejer, which we enjoyed enormously. On the same day we also spent an hour or two in Medina Sidonia, an ancient and equally lovely hilltop village. We were there in March, and the weather was lovely. It might be quite warm/hot in September, so having accommodations with a/c might be a sensible idea.
Photos for what it's worth -

Medina Sidonia (we were there just before the bruja is torched for Carnaval)

Vejer is very charming, but much smaller than Cádiz.
On the other hand, Vejer is halfway between Tarifa and Cádiz, easy for daytripping to either town.
If you visit Gibraltar, I hope you won't be disappointed. And take into consideration the sometimes long lines at the border. And what about post Brexit???

We spent 4 nights in Cadiz and really loved it. Also had a rental car so did day trips - I think you could stay in either place for two nights and cross visit (but then I hate one nighters).
Another idea (if you haven't been there) is to spend the two nights in Cordoba before Sevilla. It twins really nicely with Sevilla.
But no bad choices!

We're returning to both Cádiz and Vejer this March because we enjoy them both for different reasons. I think it depends on whether you want more city liveliness, like you'll have in Málaga with its waterfront promenades or more Moorish hill town charm, like the Gaucín-Ronda area.
Vejer for me is the very prettiest of all the Andalusian white towns. It's immaculate, still not overly touristed, has become a gourmet food Mecca (Viña y Mar, El Jardín del Califa, La Castillería, Garimba Sur, Patria), *Many places have been "redecorated" by local designer*Gaspar Sobrino, who lives in town. It has a nice municipal market and several boutique inns like, Casa Shelly, El Califa and its new Plaza 18. (For luxury, there's Casa la Siesta outside of town.)
It's a short hop to the beautiful unspoiled beach of El Palmar, Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia right at Bolonia beach (great Gardyloo photo) and the bluefin tuna capitals of Barbate and Zahara de los Atunes (great dining at El Campero and Antonio).
Outside of town there's the Fundación NMAC, an outdoor museum of contemporary art.
And it's also a short drive from Gardyloo's Hotel Hurricane, that we've also enjoyed.
But Cádiz has city beaches and is extremely lively with lots of great tapas bars, both old time (Casa Manteca) and modern (El Faro/Código de Barra). It offers a great deal: Spain's oldest covered market, an excellent archaeological museum (Museo de Cádiz) with fine Phoenician and Roman artifacts, fine arts museum (if you're a fan of Zurbarán & Murillo), a vast cathedral, a Roman theater, a camera oscura in the Torre Tavira watchtower...more sites to visit within the city. *There's also a lovely Parador with Atlantic facing rooms.
And there's El Puerto de Santa María and its visitable wineries (Osborne & Gutiérrez Colosía) just across the bay, reachable by catamaran.
And for non-sherry wines, look for Tierra de Cádiz labels such as Forlong, Barbazul, Entrechuelos.
You will have great food and wine in both, but more opportunities for music in Cádiz, if you like flamenco or maybe your dates might coincide with some performance at the Gran Teatro Falla.
I would visit Tarifa on the way, but I also echo MyriamC's remarks about Gibraltar.

Thanks so much for the great input.
We will indeed skip Gibraltar and see it from afar.
Since we will be heading to Sevilla for a couple of days after, I think we will stay in Vejer for two days and enjoy a bit more time away from the hustle and bustle of cities.
Gracias!
