Cable car ride near Lienz/Salzburg

We will be visiting the Lienz to Salzburg area next June. My partner would like to try a cable car ride up to a mountain peak. We will also be driving the Grossglockner trail, do we really need a cable car ride after this scenic tour? Would something near Eagle’s Nest be a good idea? What are your thoughts?

Hi,
We are leaving in 3 weeks for the same areas! We plan on the Jennerbahn in Berchtesgaden area this year. For me, after driving many passes (our first time driving the Grossglockner is this year also) I still like taking cable cars, but that's just me.

Paul, I saw the site with the cable cars to Jennerbahn. It cerntainly will be on our way from Lienz to Salzburg. Have you been to Eagle's Nest?

No, I haven't been to Eagle's Nest yet. This is our first time in the Berchtesgaden area. We have been to Austria and Bavaria 4 times and the Dolomites twice though and are driving from Berchtesgaden, over the Grossglockner Pass with a stay in Heiligenblut, Austria, before heading to the Dolomites in Italy. Although I don't know what your intersets, time frame or transportation options are, but the Dolomites and Italy are very close to Lienz and, IMO, spectacular.
I know I probably went overboard here but...you may find these sites helpful:
www.berchtesgadener-land.com
www.berchtesgaden.com
www.alpineroads.com
www.grossglockner.com
www.osttirol.com
www.heiligenblut.at
If I can be of help, just ask.

You can pick up the ski lift for the Jennerbahn near the Konigsee parking lot, about a 30 minute drive from the Eagle's Nest. This is a small, 2-3 person enclosed lift (not a cable car) that doesn't go too high and provides an enjoyable view. At the top of the Jenner, there are multiple hiking trails if the spirit moves you and there is also a decent little cafetaria type restaurant. You can get reduced price on the lift ticket by using the Kur Karte that you get from any local hotel. You can also drive to the middle station and hike in (about 40 minutes) to the middle station lift In nearby St. Leonhart ( about 20 minutes from either B'gaden or Salzburg, there is a larger cable car that goes up to the summit of the Untersberg mountain. It holds about 12-15 people. This particular ride also provides a terrific view but it is not for the faint of heart. The peak that you see from the valley below is not the real peak ( the real peak is hidden from your view by the peak that you see from the parking lot)- it's about a 30 minute ride up. At the summit, there are also multiple hiking trails. Don't pick either of these if it isn't a nice day or if you can't see the summit from the parking lot.

EmilyC, in fact I am a bit "faint of heart" when it comes to heights. Is it the cable car ride or the view at the top of Untersberg mountain that might be difficult?

Oh, it's the cable car ride.....there is a false illusion from the bottom that the ride is quite short since you can see a summit. However, that "summit" is a shear cliff that the car passes over and the rest of the ride is quite high. Most first timers let out a "cry" when they realize that they are not at the summit!! The first time that I did this ride there was a fellow in front of me with a yellow sweater on. I ended up staring at that sweater for the last half of the journey. Once you get to the summit it's very nice. The Untersberg is flatter and has more terrain at the top than other summits. I would stick to the Jenner and see what you think of that. If it's early June there may be snow at the Jenner peak.

Emily, yes the Jenner sounds like it will be more comfortable for me. Thanks for your insights!
