Oh deary deary me.

Thanks Rex for pointing out my mammoth error. I'll be careful about quoting vital statistics in the metric system in future - I could end up getting a slap in the face.

Even at 650mm (just over 25 inches in sensible measurements!) the glass item is extremely heavy. Could say it weights a ton but this might be misinterpreted as another error in weights and measurements!

Once again thanks for all your input. In the meantime. after family discussion, we have decided the turtle is not a suitable heirloom.

We have cancelled the reservation in accordance with our written agreement with the vendor (both by letter and email) and also sent the confirming documents to our credit card company.

One small potential snag we have noticed is that the Visa credit card slip I signed from Deutsche Bank SpA has in small print "NO REFUND NO CANCELLATION"

Our UK Visa card companies offer car-holders protection in the case of non-delivery or other serious default of the retailer. Does the same apply in the States?

Wondering if the form from the German bank cancels the effect of the normal contract between myself and my own Visa card company.

Hope to post a follow up message that the refund (or return of deposit) will go according to agreement.

PS Rex...

All images on both pages of the photo web-link are working for me but I might be using information in my internet cache. Were you able to open the second page of thumbnails OK and not able to open individual images?

Got to the second page, but I could see no thumbnails for images 7-13 (on the first page), nor 14-23, on the second page.

As for the math, I didn't use a calculator 6.5 meters is about 6.5 x 3 feet = 19.5 feet, plus about another 10%.

Using the more precise method 650 / 2.54 = 255.9 inches (with a calculator) = 20 feet and 15.9 inches additional (without a calculator)!

All pages and all thumbnails viewable from both Explorer 6 and Mozilla Firefox.

Damn all this difficult metric stuff is the fault of the French. :lol

Full refund has been arranged.

I did not appreciate that although an item is shown as debited against your Visa account immediately the retailer does not actually receive money until the claim is put to his/her bank.

So I guess the credit card companies are making interest all the time the retailer delays presenting the request for payment.

So thankyou Vetreria Artistica Gritti, Murano for making the arrangements that enabled us to see this wonderful modern glass and glassmaking and the way you have kept your undertaking concerning return of our deposit.

Where do you find a broker in Venice to assist with purchasing Murano glass or any other art pieces?

<< After that, we went looking for the glass maker recommended by massagediva here on this site, Mauro Vianello, Calle della Mandol 3728 (www.glasshandmade.it). We had a great visit with this artisian. He makes glass right there in his shop. He was working as we walked in. Easy to talk to. We learned about his background and about the phonies in town who don't make glass here but buy it abroad and who falsely claim they put gold in the glass when it's really copper. He was refeshingly honest and proud of the glass making tradition. We bought a bunch of stuff from him, including another B-day present for the wife, a glass necklace and matching earrings. When he learned it was her birthday, he gave her a free glass Easter egg! A good recommendation, massagediva >>

Copied from a previous fodors post.

NYCFoodSnob

I have posted a thread called "Venini Glass in Venice" but didn't get much response.

I am seriously lookin to get a glass vase (not the over-decorated, mass-produced kind) in Venice. So I am looking for gallery glass rather than glass shops - did a bit of homework and have come up with some names like Venini, Archemede Seguso, Moretti;. Since you are a "collector" I hope you can help me:

- I can'l afford the Chihuly price. With my range of $1000-$3000 do you think I can pick up anything by the so-called Masters? (well, of reasonable size - I don't want to spend $3000 on a Master vase that's 2" tall!)

- Without knowing a soul in Italy how can I get in touch with a glass broker? if you don't mind sharing you can email me directly at [email protected]

- I like the simple design, usually one or two colors. Are there other names that I should look for besides the above?

Thanks so much in advance for your (or anyone else who is knowledgeable about the subject) help!!!

I have been lurking with interest on this discussion. I have two questions for NYCFOODSNOB, or any other very knowledgeable posters. First, I checked the web site of the aforementioned Mauro Vianelli. But I wonder if this kind of work is in the category of those master artisans that you have discussed or would this be considered more commercial work? Also, is the work of the masters always signed? Thanks so much. Just interested for possible purchase in the future, or more to learn about this interesting and beautiful idiom.

I'm going to interlope on this thread, I hope you don't mind Doodlebugg. We're also going to Venice and I would love to bring back a lighting fixture of some sort-lamp or small chandelier. Does anyone have any idea where such things can be found and what price range?

Good morning to everybody!
I am an italian girl and I allow me to make some suggestions:
- if you look for vases, glasses, wine glasses or collections in glass I recommend you Gabbiani in Murano
- if you look for sculptures in glass I recommend you ARS Murano.

You can see a large collection of their products in following website: http://venetoshop.com/vetro-di-murano.html

I hope you like them too
