We stayed at this place and found it to be quiet, clean and comfortable.

Two years ago we stayed at the Pension U Lilie, which is very near the Charles Bridge, so a great location for walking. It is inexpensive, and quaint and charming and clean. A tad bit shabby, but not crummy or anything. Others on this forum has posted good reviews of the Pension Dientzenhofer, which is on the other side of the bridge and just slightly more than the U Lilie. Try the livingprague.com website by a local, who also lists places to stay.

We stayed at the Pension Unitas. Great location, free breakfast and interesting. Use to be an ex- prision. The breakfast was not the best.

We have Hotel Hastal Praha booked. Their web site is http://www.hastal.com/ and if you book here they give you a 20% discount. We e-mailed them for availability then faxed them our CC details. It's very near the Old Town square and our rate is about 102€ per night in May! They have very good Trip Advisor reviews, but I've seen nothing on Fodor's about this hotel.

Does anyone have any experience with Hotel Hastal?

The Hotel Kampa Island is a great choice in an ideal location. Check them out on google and tripadvisor. I wrote the earliest review of this hotel on TA and subsequent reviewers almost all agree. One of the very few less than fully positive reviews is for a hotel called the Na Kampa which is a different place altogether.

My mistake - it is the Hotel Kampa Garden, not Island as I wrote. It is located on Kampa Island which is right under the Charles Bridge.

We stayed at Prague Room a couple years ago. They're individual apartments -- we were in the Chestnut apartment. Good location between the Charles Bridge and the Castle right on the main historical street that leads up to the castle (can't thnk of the name). The apartment itself was OK - clean but very bare bones, updated kitchen and big bathroom with a separate room for the toilet. Here's the link: http://www.pragueroom.com/rates.htm

What's the deal with the Charles Bridge renovations? I'm very unclear about that....

Sorry I cannot recommend a budget hotel as I stay in ones a little more than that.

I was just there about a month ago, and the bridge was normal. City of Prague has a website, and it just says the renovations will last about two years, the bridge will not be closed to pedestrians during that time, but they'll do half at a time -- the work is scheduled to start sometime this Fall. On nice thing, perhaps, is that they say they will return to gas lamps on the bridge turning that work.
