Any hotel/hostel recommendations for 2 female travellers; tips; highlights etc. for a short visit to the city and surroundings?

Denise: Here is a web site you might like: www.bilbao.net. when you see it, click on English for some help on the left side of the screen.
You really should write to the Tourist Office in Bilbao and ask for info. They will send you a lot of good stuff.
But when there, be sure to walk over the bridge near the center of town to the old town. It is safe and fun.
Center of town where the good hotels are is quite beautiful. I don't have info on budget help.

Hi Denise,
the Hostal Begoña is very good located indeed, just between the Old Town and the Ensanche.
Another place (more expensive but brand new)is the Petit Palace Arana, just in front of the Arriaga. I had friends staying there before Christmas and they loved it. They got a rate of 80 Euro including buffet breakfast (that would be around 40 pounds, I think).
http://www.hthotels.com
Another one to check is the Hotel Avenida http://www.bchoteles.com/avenida_cs.htm , a bit far away from the centre, but well communicated.

You can do a search in the forum. There have been a few questions about it. If you want, you can send me an email to
[email protected]

Rgds, Cova

Another vote for the Hostal Begona. I found it reasonably priced, friendly, modern and very centrally located - just a stone's throw from the Casco Viejo. Enjoy Bilbao!

Does anyone know how far the Hostal Begona is from the Guggenheim?

On foot along the river, only about 10 minutes. If by tram, about 3-4 minutes.
