Sorry this happened. Besides the monetary loss it's frightening (to say the least!) to wake up to someone inside your room or apartment!
The rubber wedge door stopper is an excellent idea. Not sure if it would keep a person out? But would surely slow them down.

It could be that your loss would be covered by your own homeowner's or renter's insurance, but the policy may have limits, e.g. it might not over losses that occur outside of the country where you live. But if it would cover it, you would need a police report to prove the loss occurred, so getting the police to respond would be necessary.
All in all,the owner's response to you sounds a little fishy to me. It might just be that they didn't even carry insurance, or who knows maybe they were involved?
Whether the door was locked or not is immaterial - it's still a burlary.

Now back to our topic, how can they prove the door wasn't locked, anyway?
I'm not a lawyer, but I think you shouldn't mention this. It hurts your case.
Insurance companies are experts at evading compensation for burglary.
