Budapest opera house shows

Hi everyone

I've just checked opera house shows for December (DECEMBER!!)
and i've found out that most of the tickets sold out! (One show was completly sold out).

Did anyone had same expirience before? Does it make sense?

idan,

it would have been helpful if you had provided a link to the website but no matter, it didn't take long to find it.

When I searched via the calendar button, you're right, it mostly seemed sold out, but when I tried a different way, searching for a work I might want to see, success!

Here's the link I used for Boheme:

https://opera.jegy.hu/program/bohemelet-67765

I think that there are still seats for Fledermaus as well and possibly for other works too.

It's worth persisting - the opera house is beautiful. We saw Boheme there a few years ago and loved it.

Im in budapest in 14-21.

I waited very much to see la bohem there, but unfurtonatly, the only show plays while im there is in the 17th, and it has been sold out.

It seems strange...

Operas and ballets often sell out far in advance- esp when it's a performance of one of the most popular works.

Don't see why you find this surprising. In NYC now Hamilton is sold out well into 2017 and if you want tickets now on the secondary market each ticket will be more than $500.

yes, sadly you are going to be visiting at what I would suspect is a very popular time.

You could still do a tour of the opera house [and see if you can pick up any returns at the same time, or buy tickets for the Nutcracker - I know that it's a ballet but the music is lovely and it would be a fun way to see the opera house.

I would check with your hotel concierge. They can often get tickets to things that are "sold out" but be prepared to pay a premium price for the tickets plus a nice tip for the concierge.

Update

It turns out (after talking to the four seasons concierge) that this specific show is a privet event, and that is the reason all ticket was "sold out".

So unfurtonatly i won't see la bohem.(and i have already got nutcracker tickets)

I saw that there are tickets to Carmelites.
Somone knows it and tell if it is recomended for first timers at the opera?

Just a related question for performances at the Opera house.

What is the dress code, if there's any, to attend the performances? Do people generally dress formally and wear family jewels?

Is a jacket required for man? Thanks

I have, unfortunately, yet to attend a performance in that house but I have in many other European venues. Barring an opening night performance, I can more or less predict you may very well see every degree of dress from coats and ties and gowns to jeans (with or without tears at the knees.

I suspect you can get away with not wearing a jacket if taking one would be for this one event. These days I take one but I rarely wear a tie anymore; a buttoned at the neck shirt often suffices.

Now, if you are one of those folks who gets upset because you took the time to "dress" and there are others in attendance who did not, then dress and be prepared for possible anger.

I presume you mean the Dialogues of the Carmelites. I don't think I would recommend it for someone attending an opera for for the first time.

It will likely be sung in French with Hungarian and perhaps English surtitles.

Check it out on Youtube to see if it might appeal, however.
