Budapest - Hotel or B&B
We are 4 couples who are doing a cycling trip from Vienna to Budapest in September next year. At the end of our trip we would like to spend a few days in Budapest.
First up, we are looking for a hotel or B&B recommendation. None of us enjoy the chain hotels so we are looking for something that is either family owned and run or a smallish hotel. We had hoped to get into the B&B Anabelle but they only have 3 rooms available. Our budget is GBP100 per room per night.
Any hidden gems that anyone knows about? We would like to be well placed in terms of getting around the city to the various sites etc.
Second up... we all love trying authentic food. Recommendations for little cafes that are hidden down alleys, restaurants that are off the beaten track etc In other words, where we would find locals eating rather than only fellow tourists.
I look forward to hearing from you. Many thanks.

I highly recommend the Citadella Guesthouse - I have stayed there twice and loved it. I also recommend booking with them directly - Zita is wonderful, her place is immaculate, breakfast is presented beautifully, great location too. Again, book with them directly if you can.

We found Budapest EXTREMELY easy to navigate in. We had visions of 1950's era communist housing, all shades of dark grey. Budapest was instead very colorful, very friendly. We stayed at Gold Hotel, FWIW. It was next to a streetcar line, 2 stops from city center. 3 stories
Pleasant. Helpful.
We asked the desk clerk for a dinner recommendation the first night. She recommended the Trofea Grill, said it was a buffet. We had visions of crappy Old World Buffet steam table food, but it was late, we were tired, and hungry. So we went. Not too far away. The food was EXCELLENT!!! Nothing was overcooked. Meat was cooked to our order. Complimentary Hungarian wine. The thing that pleased me most was that it featured Hungarian specialties, with Hungarian and English signs, so you could understand what the meal was, rather than guess. That came in helpful later that week at other restaurants, where you were (as a result) familiar with what the the words on the new restaurant were/meant. The food was also VERY tasty. One item that we fondly remember was Hungarian fish soup. This could, of course, have been very "meh", but was at least the equal of cioppino I've had in San Francisco, seafood chowder I've had in Maine, or boulliabase I've had in Provence. Other of their specialties were equally tasty. The restaurant seemed oriented to business-types, and upper-class local citizens...I think the price 7 years ago was...
.....$12.(what a steal) Probably up to $20 now.

I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Some friends of ours recently stayed at the Hotel Moments in Budapest, and loved it. Excellent breakfast, too, they said.

I was there last month (US, 69, F,solo) and stayed in an apt through booking.com. I used that site throughout my whole trip and use them for all my trips and very successfully.
You might want to check it out, 4 rooms, 8 people and use a review score of 8 and 9. There were some available in Sept as I plugged in random dates in early Sept.
Watch the cancellation policy so your card is not charged, make the reservation and have a place for the 8 of you to stay and then give yourself time to find other accommodations if you want to do that. But at least you know you have a place for the 8 of you.
I ending up in Budapest with your bikes, I'd stay on the flat Pest side rather than the really hilly Buda side. Enjoy.
