Budapest and Prague from Vienna by car
Hi,
Three of us are traveling to Europe in last two weeks of September. We are landing in Vienna. Spend 3 days there and then thinking of renting a car to visit Budapest( 3 days) and Prague (3 days).
We have been debating whether to take the train or drive. I know, in Budapest and Prague you don't need a car for sight seeing.
The rain tickets are Euro 33 to Budpest and 44 to Prague from Vienna. for three people, possibly car will be cheaper. We have driven in Europe before and enjoyed the experience.
Do you think it is sensible to hire a car?
Cheers

If cost is a big factor in your decision, add it all up... gas+parking+rental, plus you are typically supposed to pay additional fees if you take an Austrian rental car into Hungary or Czech Republic.
I usually vote for going by car because it's nice to be able to go down a random road and stop wherever you want along the way. We did the drive you're considering. Vienna-Budapest wasn't a very exciting drive (maybe we didn't take the best route?) We made a few stops along the way from Vienna-Prague though.
I guess it depends on what you want to do. If you have a lot you want to see inside each city, I'd just take the train from place to place. If you're wanting a scenery/countryside trip, then drive.

Thanks CIZ.
In addition to the cost we like the freedom car gives.
I get from your post that Vienna to Budapest is not an exiting drive. How about Budapest to Prague is it the same.
Anyone have suggestions for accommodation in Budapest or Prague at around 40 Euro per person?

hemant - I have been looking at driving Prague - Krakow - Budapest next year, but the drop off charges I have been quoted are larger than the national debt. Unless we find a deal, we are resigned to taking the train for inter country travel next time. Good luck and let us know what you come up with.
