Budapest and Beer
A group of 5 will be visiting Budapest for 2 days in Jan 2003 (the 1st & 2nd of Jan). We love to try very local places in between site seeing that include good beer. I have searched this entire site and do not find this subject. Can some other beer lovers give us some suggestions?
Thank you

Dear Ms Shearer,

You will get better replies, I think, on http://www.lonelyplanet.com, under Thorn Tree, Eastern Europe. Four years of reading both suggest to me that on balance Fodors readers are likely to drink wine in Hungary, while the beer enthusiasts are on the thorn tree.

Ben Haines

Eyewitness Travel has a small section on Hugarian beers in the Budapest guide. Wines seem to be more of a strong point than beer ( unlike Czech Republic ). However there are wine & beer bars - check http://www.budapestsun.com

Hi!
I don not want to dissapoint Mr. Haines but for the last 10 years the number of beer drinkers in Hungary significantly overpasses the number of wine drinkers. Just go to a restaurant visited mostly by Hungarians and you will have the answer.
As for local drafts we have about 5 names worth mentioning and the most famous is the Dreher.
We have a few restaurants where they brew beer on sight.
The Kaltenberg, The Gerbeaud beer-house (down below the famous Gerbeaud Cafe) and the best of the best the recently opened Pulaner beer-house in the MOM Park. Accompanied with the famous Csülök, smoked pork leg, I guarantee you will have total satisfection.
Best regards,
bela Lukacs
