Brussels or Antwerp for a day?
I have a decision to make. I am going to be on a river cruise that stops in Antwerp for a full day (actually staying overnight). There is an optional full-day excursion to Brussels. I wonder if anyone can comment on these two cities. Which would you recommend for a full day? I think I'd like to explore a little on foot, do some light shopping, maybe a museum or two, and "hang out." How would you compare the two cities for this type of activity?? Thanks!!

I love Brussels, but if you're going to be in Antwerp anyway I'd say make the most of it and spend the day there. It's a nice place to stroll around, shop and sightsee, and the main shopping area and sights are all within easy walking distance of each other.

Stay in Antwerp! Make sure to read Jack's excellent "Inimitable Travel Guide". Jack is a proud Antwerpian, so am I.

Antwerpen is a fascinating city and is in many ways more interesting than Brussels.
There is no need to book a full-day excursion to Brussels. There are frequent trains between the two cities so you can easily visit Brussels to see some of the central sights if you really want to, and have time to see Antwerpen as well.
