How far is brugge from Brussels? Can it be done in a day trip? I will be there mid january, IS that an ok time to go or will it be dark and gloomy?

I wasn't there in the winter, so I can't tell you what the weather will be like, but Brugge is certainly doable in a daytrip from Brussels.
The travel time is only about 45minutes to an hour and a half depending on what kind of train you take (ie;high speed)
Brugge is a wonderful little town and you shouldn't miss it - it was the highlight of my trip this summer, we spent two full days there!

Hope this has helped!
Julie

I don't think there IS a high-speed train between the two, but it's a fast 50 minute trip by regular train:

http://www.b-rail.be/

You can do it easily and I'd high tail it out Brussels as quick as you can. What a BORE of a city. Good chocolates and frites though. Take the train and not a tour. I made the mistake of doing a tour with my travel companion a few years ago. THe guide was so pompous. He said it was positively essential for everyone to stick together and eat and shop in the same restaurants and shops. Im sure he was getting a fat commision off everything. His "concern" was that we'd get lost. So my nurse friend and I ditched the group and took the train back to Brusels. You see there are a lot of canals all over the city and you might get lost for a minute or two . Get a good map and if you do get lost just ask for directions. The people were very nice. Its a gorgeous town as well is Ghent. Good luck.

Wow, Simone, a bit long winded wouldn't you say? I guess what you are saying is that Brugge is good for a day trip. You do have a point about tour guides and I would do the same sas you did , Simone.
Greg,
<Will it be dark and gloomy?>
We were in Brugge in late December last year - which is the same weatherwise - on a very rainy day. In that case the answer to your question is YES.
With a bit of luck however it's cold but sunny. No-one knows.
