Brugges as day trip from Brussels
A friend who works for Marriott can get us the Marriott in Brussels for 55 euros per night. Is it worth it to pay more to stay in Brugges, or would you daytrip there from brussels?

I would definitely not day-trip to Brugges. Brugges is a complete joy, both day and night, and in day-tripping to Brugges I'm afraid you'd miss out on all the charm that exists there both by day and by evening. Additionally you could easily stay in Brugges for 55 euros per night (or less). Granted you won't be staying at a Marriott, but in Brugges I'd actually prefer a nice little B&B and the place is full of them. The one we stayed in only ran us 40 euros a night for a double and it was wonderful--full breakfast with chocolates and all.

I'll give you the other side of the coin. We stayed in Brussels, enjoyed the Grande Place and the wonderful little side streets that surround it, and did a day-trip by train to Brugge. We wandered the streets, took the boat trip on the canals, stayed until very late in the day, then went back to Brussels and enjoyed a wonderful meal in one of the outdoor cafes, as I remember (it's been 5 years!) To us, it was a good side trip, and I think it's very do-able. Just another opinion.

Hi orange,
Two very good suggestions.
I would go with the day trip. It's about one hour by train.

For the amount you are saving on hotel, plus not having to deal with the pain of packing and unpacking, I would definitely vote for a day trip. Just make sure you know when the last train back from Bruges to Brussels is (I know it's at least past 9 pm).

I agree that Brugges is a great day trip from Brussels. Take an early train that will get you there when the first sight you want to see opens, and be aware of the train schedule so you can spend at least part of your evening there as well.

55 euros is a great rate, but where is the Marriott? I can't place it in my mind.
Brugge (it's Bruges in French, Brugge in Flemish, not Brugges in either) is delightful at night after the day trippers have gone. But Brussels has a few things to see, too. Your choice!
If your trip to Bruges/Brugge will be on a week-end, consider going first class in the train. Train fares are reasonable in Belgium, even for first class, and second class can be VERY crowded and noisy on week-ends.

The address given on the Marriott website is Rue A. Orts 3-7, Brussels 1000 and says it's opposite the stock exchange building. Given the great rate, I think we will opt to stay there and take the train to Bruge for the day.
