bruges - which hotel would you choose?
Hi - I'm heading to Bruges in September for 2 nights. I have narrowed my hotel search down to 5 hotels, all have availability for the dates I will be there. I have researched them here and on TripAdvisor and they all have good comments.
My criteria is that I want to be convenient to the train station, near the Markt and aldstat area. On a canal would be nice but not mandatory. I don't want to spend more than 120 Euros per night for a twin.
Any comments or experiences that would make you lean towards one or another?

Can't help you with any of those places because we stayed at a wonderful B & B that is less $$ than 3 of the places you listed. Absoluut Verhulst was a wonderful place with great hosts and a delicious breakfast. We were able to walk everywhere from there. I highly recommend it! A taxi was less than 10 euro.

My three top choices would be Egmond, Egmond , and oh, yes, Egmond again. I agree with RobJames..having stayed there twice and having sent many friends and family to lodge there while in Brugge, I can't say enough good things about the place...location, charm, it's own lovely gardens, the tranquil shores of the Minnewater, the nearby Beguinage with it's yard full of daffodils, the Minnewater Square...and guest parking right there on the grounds!

If you like small, hidden gem restaurants, unfound by tourists, consider Cafe Topaz (food photos there as well).
We enjoyed the horse and buggy ride (embark at town square) to get an overview of the town.
Try as many Belgian beers as you can.
Get the walking tour from the tourist bureau.
Out of the ordinary - long bow and cross bow museums.
Lunch? - chocolate, chocolate, chocolate

I can't comment on the hotels you've picked, but I can tell you that Brugges is wonderful! I was there last October and fell in love with the city. If you want to see more photos of Brugges, here's my website with pictures of my trip... http://lynnsview.com/Gallery/

Those pictures take me right back to Belgium. And yes...chocolate chocolate and chocolate are three excellent choices for lunch. Every day. You could also try chocolate for breakfast as well...

most definitely, and if you look at my pictures, you'll see that I followed that philosophy in Bruges and Brussels. I even took pictures of my chocolates.

Restaurants nearby - absolutely - in fact, as close as a stone's throw.
Brugge is a very walkable city. There are several around the square by the nearby Beguinage. If you love bouillabaisse, we had the best ever there.

Thanks, Robjame. I was hoping that would be the case. I was having second thoughts about staying there - mostly that it was 37 euro/night more than my 2nd choice (Jacobs) and for that money I could get a nice meal. But, I decided that you only live once and I have a chance to stay in a manor home with a beautiful garden - AND it is highly recommended by the Fodors gang and many guide books. I can live on beer and chocolate while I am there...
