Broadford, Skye
Can anyone shed information on this village in Skye. Been thinking of taking the bus from Kyle of Lochalsh to Broadford, spend the day and night and then the morning bus to Armadale to catch the ferry to Mallaig.

It's a very small village.. the most noteworthy thing is the Three Chimney's, a good but overpriced restaurant, and a serpentarium of sorts. However, the best B&B I've been to was near Broadford...Tir Alainn (beautiful country). I believe they have a website, wonderful view of the sea!

Roger

A silly little trip to Broadford's not a great idea. YOU should defintile stay in the Sliganchan Hotel. It's your sort of pub.

There really is nothing much to Broadford, and whilst Portree is not exactly the centre of the universe, you will find it more to your taste, and it's the same bus that goes back to Mallaig.

The Three Chmineys has NOT migrated to Broadford, but remains a long way away, near Dunvegan. http://www.threechimneys.co.uk/findus.html

But it is one of the top 100 restuarnts in the world and thus, maybe not THAT overpriced.

The Chrises and I and Gordon and Laurs had a great meal in the Seagull, just outside Broadford, some years ago, but it has closed down.

Definitely go on at least as far as the Slig, and maybe to Portree

Roger - listen to Sheila. there is no reason to make a special trip to Broadford. Its main claim to fame is it has the first Tourist Information office after the Bridge - and it has a convenient petrol station and grocery store.

Just about anywhere else on the Isle would be better. The Sliganchan is sort of at the crossroads of the island and is probably the best location (even if it wasn't a great pub) to stay to get to any part of Skye.

And - Green Dragon must have been very confused - three chimneys is no where near Broadford.

OK, what about this? I will arrive by train in Kyle of Lochalsh at 1:18. I could then take the bus to Portree for the rest of the day and night. Next late afternoon I could take the bus to Broadford and spent the night. Take a look at this B&B, "Berabhaigh". Thanks for you input.

janis, first thanks for your responses. With regard to Sheila, it has been my pleasure to have met her on past trips to Scotland. The point of my "silly little trips" is to kinda go off the beaten track, avoiding those places where everyone else goes. This trip would be a solo trip as my wife has no interest in doing what I am thinking about. As to other places I will spent the nights will be Barrow in Furness, Perth, and Reading. Weird I know, but I like to take rail and bus trips to different places. Thanks again.

Roger - if it is your hope is to get to "off the beaten path" places - that is even more reason to stay somewhere other than Broadford. It is definitely ON the beaten path. To understand - when travelers get to Skye (whether they use the ferry or the bridge) Broadford is the first real town they hit. It is sort of like Ft William but on a much smaller scale. Just a place to stop for the tourist office, use the loo, tacky shops, and several B&Bs. Some people doing a day trip to Skye never get beyond Broadford - they drive that far, take a couple of pics and turn around and leave the island.

If you want to get away from it all try any number of places on the other side of the island. There is a hostel at the bottom of glen Brittle which is really scenic
