"...I don't buy any Cadbury's chocolate any more,..."

Nor do I, wherever it's made, never have. I don't eat much chocolate but when I do I, too, like the good ones with 70% or more.

Even Rupert Murdoch had the sense to appear before such a committee.>>

bet he wished he hadn't and that his son had stayed away too.

<<"Sounds like the Commons was engaging in some publicity stunting . . ."

They're politicians, what else would it be?>>

by and large, HoC committees take their investigative roles very seriously and there is very little politicking.

On our first trip to Ireland, around Easter 1993, my daughter and I took Cadbury Eggs and boy, were we embarrassed when we saw just how much Cadbury chocolate was available EVERYWHERE!

On more recent trips I have found Cadbury with Rough Cut Coconut and Cadbury with Hazlenut but the last 3 trips neither one was available, at least not at the c-stores. But I did find one Dr. Pepper this last trip; apparently the only one in the country.

Not (for those of us of a certain age) if your name is Helga.

>>But I did make him some dense dense cake with raisins, currents and nuts. He said it was "wedding cake"

Was he pulling my leg?<<

Possibly, a little bit. But it's also possible that he just doesn't have that sort of cake on any other occasions than weddings and Christmas, like quite a lot of people. You will see Dundee cake on sale in the shops (and, as I recall, individually packaged slices in the days of British Rail buffet cars), but the general tendency nowadays seems to be towards cupcakes, sponges and cream cakes.

Some of the things I like to bring back (I can get some of these in the U.S. but not all and not this cheaply):

Jaffa Cakes
Crisps
Heinz Baked Beans
Cherry Bakewells! Cherry Bakewells, Cherry Bakewells!
Toffee Bakewells
I like Sainsbury's store varieties and Marks & Spencer items
Boots makeup/soaps, etc. (you can get some in the U.S. but not all)

It's hard to find here at home, though I can occasionally, so I really love Fentiman's ginger beer on trips to the UK. Of all the brands I've tried over the years, it's been the best ginger experience for me.

I can't see that anyone has mentioned Gü Puds .. yum, yum, yum!

Both of those aren't good for packing, though, so I'd buy some Mars bars to bring home, and other assorted candies: Bassett's sherbet lemons (and jelly babies

In the US, acetaminophen is available over the counter at 500 mg.

Yes--they package it differently, call it extra strength and charge more for it.

A friend of my daughter's took Marks and Spencer's biscuits and Heinz beans. She says that American ones are different, and her cat had asked her to bring back rabbit flavoured cat food

Regarding the Kraft CEO, I think it was arrogant not to appear or send a senior executive, although, like Murdoch, with probably no intention of changing policy or position.

I've not enough experience with Cadbury to know whether it is better, worse or the same now. So many Kraft products are over-processed fake crap, I doubt the takeover was for the better.

Some Cadburys chocolate is still made in Bournville in the UK.
Be such a shame if they closed it( for many reasons) not least because my Grandmother worked there for years.......we used t have access to the employee shop... Bags of very cheap cream eggs etc... They even used to sell bags of broken chocolate biscuits for about 10p!

Baxter's Soup: Cullen Skink. (Made with smoked haddock, I think, not stripey lizards.)
