News on this early Christmas night is that a terror attack has taken place on a plane out of Amsterdam. A twenty-two year old man is said to lit an explosive on the plane that was forced to land in Detroit earlier this evening. The terrorist on board is said to be a Nigerian national with terrorist ties. The White House has already said that yes this incident was a terrorist attack. CNN is reporting that there are ties to Al-Queda. The man is saying his orders to attempt this attack came from that organization.

The flight was a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, and the man set off what some are now calling firecrackers on his lap minutes before the flight was set to land in Detroit. Flight 253 was on an Airbus A330 with approximately 278 of the available 300 seats taken. Those that suffered injuries from the firecrackers were taken to nearby hospitals.

Following this incident, President Obama has requested increased security measures at airports and on flights into the country. Homeland Security is promising increased screening at airports. The man named in the attack is said to have been on watch lists, but this begs me to ask the question - if he was on watch lists how was he on the plane, and even if he somehow made it on the plane, how did he get the substance and firecrackers on board?

This is a question that I'm sure will be asked by others in the days to come. This situation could have been a lot worse.

Just watched the report on SKY News. My first thoughts are that he new the security would be the slackest at the airport in Nigeria. After that I would think things would get more tricky for him - I dare say he has done a dummy run before to see what could stop him. Looks like it was a breeze.
My heart goes out to the passengers who had the living daylights scared out of them.

He would have gone through security again in AMS. The explosives, a powder and an ignition device were apparently strapped to his upper thigh and so not spotted. People are not generally frisked at AMS unless they set off the alarms. He was on the watched list and since we all have to give so many details before flying to the US now I am shocked he wasn't picked up on for extra attention. It makes me wonder what the point is of having to give the US government all this info if they don't act upon it.
Security has been stepped up at European airports for all flights to the US, and people are being searched as well as screened, as is all their luggage.

I bet his compadre`s are ticked off after he fluffed the whole thing! With the added security it means waiting for things to die down and all airports becoming a little complacent again. They need the staff at Singapore's airport - Changi, to show them how to do their stuff.

Another blow to political correctness. We are wasting our resources checking out grandmothers instead of young muslims who want to fly to the US. It's time to use intelligent profiling.

<<< It's time to use intelligent profiling. >>>

Given that the "intelligent" profiling to date has been to pick on mainly people of a somewhat dusky appearance - including Sikhs & Hindus - and that Nigeria is a largely black Christian country, I fail to see how targeting "Muslims" is going to work

Get ready to strip down to your underwear before getting on any flights! OR maybe a strip search with rubber gloves?

Just to reassure everyone, the Transportation Secretary said they have no information to lead them to think he was not a "lone wolf".
I'm somewhat puzzled, though; do they think he got the PETN and the TATP igniter at a Walgreen's drugstore? And why is it we have to take our shoes off, but some dude who walks up to the counter the morning of the flight with no luggage and no reservation, and pays $2200 for a coach seat, draws no alarms?
Time to shake the dust off the book, "How to Profile".
