Hi all, I need to order four tickets for the Borghese Gallery, for October 16. When I go to the official site (all in Italian), I only see availability through October 6, cost E15. On other websites I see dates further ahead than that, for about E20.

Should I wait and get them from the official site, or pay the extra and use another vendor? Thanks for your advice. Just don’t want to miss out.

If you look at the official site, you'll see that they still have tickets for sale for tomorrow. So there's virtually no possibility that waiting a while will cause you to miss out.

I've never bought tickets in advance - I have always called ahead to make my reservation (at no cost), and purchased my tickets the day of my visit. The only time I've paid anything in advance was when I reserved for a free Sunday this past May and was charged 3 euro for the normally free reservation, because admission itself was free. If you have an interest in doing the same ( 39 06 32810 ).

At some times in the past, the Borghese Gallery has been sold out weeks in advance, but it's no longer in such great demand. Often now, you can even get in at the last minute, unless there's a highly publicized special exhibit. To guage the situation, you can try making a pretend reservation in one of the next few days.

These things go in cycles. If an article highly praises a museum in the Guardian travel page, or a popular blogger flags an archaeological site as something not to be missed, it will leap to the top of all the must-see lists. People who never darken the door of a museum at home will weep bitter tears if they can't visit the Sistine Chapel on the one day they're in Rome.

That's why I like to encourage people to visit some of the lesser-known gems when they're in Rome (or any other place). They'll never have to worry about it being sold out, and they won't be suffocated by crowds. When I'm visiting a city, I usually pick one of the famous sights to visit, and then seek out other places to see that are not as well known.

By the way, there's always a reservation fee when you buy the Borghese Gallery tickets online. Other than on the free Sundays, it's included in the ticket price. I thought it was €2, but maybe that's only at tosc, the official seller.

The Borghese strictly limits visitors inside the gallery because of fire safety regulations. The first floor (second in US terms) has only one stairway. That's why you always need a reservation, and why one group must leave before anyone else can enter. If you show up without a reservation, and the number of visitors is below the maximum, they'll sell you a ticket and let you enter, but you'll still have to leave at the end of that turn. Otherwise, if the next turn is not fully reserved, you can wait.

The main paragraph on the page with the calendar just describes the collection. The last date available on the calendar is the 6th of October, which is the last day of the summer schedule, which had Friday evening openings. Perhaps they haven't decided whether to extend that into autumn. There's also the possibility that they're planning a special exhibit, which we sometimes requires closing the museum for a day or part of a day. In that case they delay giving reservations that may need to be cancelled.

In any case, you can rest assured that tickets are not sold out. Any other eventuality can't be resolved by knowing about it far in advance, unless you haven't bought your air tickets yet. Check the calendar every so often.

As pointed out, the schedule runs through Oct 6 because of late openings on Friday and Saturday. They are just slow at updating their site. Keep checking back (you might want to delete cookies).

If you read the booking page, it says you also have the option to download and email their form with no booking charge.
