All those Donna Leon / Brunetti books. All of them say something about Venice.
I have just read a couple, “The Venetian Game” and “Vengeance in Venice”.
They are both very evocative of Venice, great reads. The author lives in Venice, and the stories really draw you in. Author is Philip Jones.

For the historical Vienna don't forget The Merchant of Venice and Othello!

I love Donna Leon but although I'm biased, I think that Phil has done just as good a job.

One of the best, if quirkiest, books I read last year was Simple Prayers, by Michael Golding.

I'm reading my first Donna Leon book now, Acqua Alta. It's good, but I think I've been spoiled by Martin Walker.

St. Cirq... try Death at La Fenice... Donna Leon's first book in the Brunetti series .My favorites are Martin W, Donna Leon and Cynthia Harrod-Eagles (the Bill Slider police procedurals.)
And every once in awhile I go back and read Patricia Highsmith

I have just finished re-reading Miss Garnet's Angel by Salley Vickers which is about a British school teacher who finally discovers life and her self after living in Venice for six months upon her retirement. Has some great evocative descriptions of Venice and a thoroughly good read in itself. I'll get a couple of the others mentioned above as I'm off to Venice in a month and love reading books about destinations I am going to.
