Booking ferry from Palermo to Naples, how soon?
We will be in Sicily for two weeks, starting with a stay in Palermo. At the end of our stay, we intend to take the ferry from Palermo to Naples, booking a cabin for two. Can this be done once in Sicily or should we book now? Thanks.

There are two ferry companies, SNAV and Tirrenia, both with sailings every night. The ships will be busiest at weekends, around public holidays and in the July-August peak holiday season. If you're travelling at a busy time, you should book in advance.
I've travelled on Tirrenia ships, sometimes booking on the spot and sometimes booking in advance on-line, but I've never used SNAV.

Much depends on the day and season of your anticipated crossing. I would follow Geoff's advice above. "Advance" bookings mean a least 10 days in advance during the peak travel seasons; a couple of days beforehand in other seasons.
