Someone said that they do not like the fact Booking only allows people to stay at the hotel to review it.
HUH?
Why would you want reviews from people who didn't stay there. That is the main reason why TA is untrustworthy, people plant both good and bad reviews purely for commercial purposes.
It is my prejudicial opinion that many of the true travelers, NOT ALL, on TA are not very sophisticated and have odd criteria.
OTOH, I find that people on Booking are all a better traveled but they too have strange criteria. Never serve a Brit breakfast tea which one degree they make it. You would think it was the main reason for the fall of the empire.
We have used Booking in 7 or 8 countries and with one exception the reviews were spot on.

To be honest, whatever the site, once you get used to their system of quoting, your rate of bad hotels will drop significantly.
I have slept in very bad hotels - but that was before...
Now I avoid 95% of the worst hotels. I'm not always in a good one, but I've not been in a bad one for the last 3 years.
Now when you read some reviews...
For the hotel Hannong, where I have stayed last month I see :

« Bel hôtel. »
• Voyage d'affaires
• voyageur individuel
• Chambre Simple (1 Personne)
• Séjour de 1 nuit
• Envoyé depuis un téléphone portable
눉La chambre était très très petite.
눇Propre et bien situé.
????? the guy says hotel is nice and give 5,4 on 10 ?
The only thing he says is that the room is small...

« Excellent hotel, I could come back with my wife. »
• Voyage d'affaires
• voyageur individuel
• Chambre Standard
• Séjour de 1 nuit

눇Welcoming staff
size of the room
location
Seems I had a bigger room... maybe I paid more and I complain less or I was lucky ? (my room was big).
Who to believe ?

That's why you should read many reviews. I saw a pretty good hotel in the 7th the other day, 9.2 on booking.
Almost all reviews mentioned the very small rooms, but added they thought that was "usual for Paris". And due to the cleanliness, very attentive staff, sound proofing and location of the hotel gave it good marks.
Very small hotel rooms do bother me (if almost everyone remarks on it, they must be very small) so I gave that particular hotel a miss (also they didn't list the size of the room in m2 on the room information page, so that confirmed the reviews I read)
otoh, if a hotel is marked down, but I read lots of reviews that say they give lower marks because "breakfast is boring and expensive for what you get", I will tend to book it anyhow because I never eat breakfast.
