Booking B&B in Paris - they want our Canadian Passport numbers

We are going through a service and had to fax deposit and now want our Canadian passport numbers.
Is this normal? The service is called Good Morning Paris. It looks to be a valid one.

Novice traveller,

Deb

Probably this is normal, because a B&B isn't a normal entity in Paris, there aren't very many and I think they may be operating like an owner who does short-term apt. rentals. I don't know what, if any, laws govern B&Bs. If like a vaccation apt. rental service, I believe they do have to obtain that info as apt. rental agencies have asked me for my passport number when renting an apt. in Paris. If you book a regular hotel, they won't do that, so it's up to you. I believe they are required to report foreigners staying in their household or something like that. Since you are having a deposit required, this sounds more like a vcation apt rental, not a hotel.

If you don't like it, just stay in a hotel.

oh, I didn't mean a hotel wouldn't ask for your passport when you checked in, and write it down, I just meant you wouldn't be asked it in advance and have to FAX it.

They are probably required, as a B&B, to pay a taxe de séjour for guests and would likely have to identify you to the authorities for that. Or something similar. I wouldn't give it another thought.

I certainly would not worry about it even though it is not a legal obligation.
