I have no idea where Ira is getting this "information" so cannot comment on its accuracy.
But, generally when airlines liquidate there has been a federal-backed requirement that other airlines must honor the tickets but only on a space-available basis. That "rule" was due to expire last month (November 2004) and I have no idea if it has been continued.
Unfortunately, there is a vicious circle now operating around US Airways..people are afraid to book or are being advised not to do so and this hinders further the airline's chances of emerging from a second bankruptcy.
Personally, I would avoid booking with them for the same reason(s) that you have been hesitant.
