Bolthole wanted!
We are looking for somewhere to spend a few days in March:
- on the coast
- max. 1 hour south of Rijeka
- small/quaint, a real place
- restaurants and shops open out of season
And somewhere to stay:
- not a 1960s glass and concrete block
- either nice hotel or good quality self catering which does short lets (with heating in case it's chilly)
Don't want much, do we?
Can anyone recommend a village or town which fits the bill? Even better, also a place to stay? Would be nice to find somewhere which doesn't get too busy closer to the season.

Sorry I don't know that area but if it was me, I'd go into a bookshop and check in a Croatia guidebook for villages/towns nearby and see what appeals. Then check on Trip Advisor for hotels/pensiones in that area.

I mean down the coast from Rijeka.
And I have a guide book. I thought this was a forum where people asked others for personal recommendations.
This is my first posting and I did not expect such an unfriendly welcome!

Sorry, sorry, did not mean to give that impression. I always try and help where I can. I only know Dubrovnik and would absolutely recommend staying there but sorry, can't help with the area near Rijeka.
At least this will 'top' your question for others to see.

I don't know the north either, but the Croatian National Tourist Board website is super useful. You could use the interactive maps to narrow down your options, then post that list to get input.
www.croatia.hr
Under Destinations, click on Kvarner region, then you'll get info and photos of every town.
I think you may have to travel a little longer than an hour to really get off the beaten track, but it shouldn't be busy in March if my experience in the south is transferable at all.
I would go to Krk for sure!

welcome to fodors.
A couple of problems:
Your title is too vague and you are pretty lucky to have had any responses. "Bolthole wanted!" could be asking about anywhere in all of Europe. Clicking on a country just lets folks search for some of the threads about that country. There is only one forum - "Europe" - and your thread is lumped in w/ ones about Scotland, Spain and Iceland.
So I'd consider re-posting w/ a title something like "Looking for comfy hotel or self-catering w/i 1 hour of Rijeka"
Also in your re-post it is always a good idea to include your price range.

Krk island is good. Rijeka airport is on the island. You might be able to get a car there and drive down to Baska. There might even be a bus from the airport. Nice little place on the coast, don't know how much of it will be open this time of year.

Thanks for the suggestions. As I said, I was interested in personal experiences. Obviously my title was wrong but, as my 1st post, I didn't realise the implications and expected to be able to go back and edit, for example, the title. I can't see how to do this - is it possible?
I did not expect a quick response at all. But I shall certainly be careful in how I post in future, as some of the responses definitely do sound less than friendly to me!
BTW, price is not an issue, that is why I didn't mention it.
