I'm a long-time client of B of A too. I set up my 4 digit PIN code 16 years ago. I never had any problem with BNP Paribas ATM's.

Good luck. Like many others I have a old Fleet account (still use the green card and call it BayBank) with a 4 digit pin.
I used the card with out a problem in France two weeks ago. I did have problems with my credit cards not having a pin number. Some places will be ok, others no.

I second (third?) the advice to change the pin to a 4 digit one.

Budman: Re: changing a PIN at a B of A ATM-
Enter your code and press 'other' to indicate your transaction type. When prompted, select a new PIN and then re-enter the new PIN to confirm.

General info-My B of A card has the same 4 digit pin PIN as my former Fleet card. It transferred automatically.

I also notified our bank in person of our travel dates and upped our daily debit amount in case anything unforeseen happened and we needed a small wad. We set our return date for the limit to default to our usual withdrawal amount.

I got my Fleet card a couple of years ago -- right before they were sold to BofA. They must have changed from a 4-digit to a 6-digit. I'll check tomorrow to see if I can change it to a 4-digit PIN. Would make life easier for me.

Budman, when my husband changed his PIN, he had to select 6 digits. Luckily, I've been able to keep the same 4 digit PIN in the string of changes from United Jersey to Fleet to B of A. Good luck!

OK. Today I went to my BofA branch, and after speaking to two people there (who also called the home office and explained my situation), I was told that they are 100% certain that I can use the first four digits in France. Not exactly what I wanted to hear...

It seems the six-digit-minimum PIN is required for newer members (including those of us who were with Fleet) ... and I believe that if any BofA customers who do have the four digits want to change their PINs, they'll need six digits.

I just want to hear from someone here who has traveled with a long PIN.

You might try searching, but I distintly recall someone posting their 6 digit pin did not work in Europe. Now I have never heard of only using 4 digits.

I was thinking of opening a new BOA account as part of my move, but I am not willing to have a six digit pin. Wonder what the rule is here in Atlanta?

Update--I e-mailed B of A today to ask for info on overseas use of ATM and debit cards. I will copy and paste their reply:

As an added measure of security, ATM and Check Cards may automatically block transactions when used outside of the United States. We ask that you contact us prior to future trips at 1.877.833.5617 and provide the dates of travel to ensure uninterrupted use of your card. If you are currently outside of the United States, we welcome you to contact us at 1.770.491.4064.

You can use your Bank of America ATM card anywhere you see the Plus or Interlink symbols that appear on the back of your card, including numerous financial institutions throughout the world. For the nearest Plus ATM, please visit www.Visa.com and click on ATM Locator at the bottom of the page. Bank of America may assess a fee for some transactions performed at ATMs operated by others and the ATM operator may charge an additional fee for cash withdrawals.

While traveling outside the United States, you can avoid the access fee by using an ATM at the following banks in these locations:

- Barclays - United Kingdom
- Deutsche Bank - Germany
- Scotiabank - Canada
- BNP Paribas - France
- Westpac - Australia and New Zealand
- Santander Serfin - Mexico.

Be sure your PIN is four digits, does not start with a zero, and that you know your PIN by numbers, as some ATMs abroad do not have letters on the keyboards.

I was in Austria a couple months ago. Before leaving, I called BofA to enquire about changing my ATM card PIN from 6 digits to 4. They told me to just use the first 4 digits and I'd be fine. I did and I was.

Trixie: In case you missed my post, I replied that my husband used the first 4 digits of his 6 digit PIN and it worked just fine for several withdrawals in April.

Trixie: I am a long time B of A customer but just recently got an ATM
card from B of A for my upcoming trip. I received my PIN in the mail and
it was 6 digits.
I knew I needed a 4 digit PIN (we used
a different bank issued ATM card in
prior trips) Saturday I went into
my branch office and requested my
PIN changed to 4 digits - the customer
service rep took my driver's license
and ATM card asked me what I wanted
for my new PIN - she entered the data
into her computer and that was it.
I went outside and tested - it worked.
So this is a new ATM card that was
issued a 6 digit number - changed to
4 digits.
I live in Florida. I don't really
understand why being a former Fleet
customer should have any bearing on
a B of A ATM card. You are now a
Bank of America customer - this is
the customer service number on the
back of my card 800-432-1000 request
ATM services and maybe they can give
you a straight answer.

PM:

FYI - Barclay's has branches outside of the UK & they fell under the same policy, as I used my ScotiaBank ATM card at several Barclays branches in Kenya and had no transaction charges.
