Again, I have not had any problems with the site working slower than it did under the old format and I actually LIKE the new format. I do agree with the person who stated that he/she did not feel the need to start a new thread with his/her name in the title. Don't you think the existing threads are enough? Putting your name in the title does make it sound as if you think you should have some special clout. It doesn't sound very nice.

Bob- you were my first Fodors response (and a very speedy one at that) when I was researching my trip to Lake Como two summers ago. Somehow you got stuck in my PC so on the rare occasion I log in here (I am usually on my laptop), you show up before I do! So, for personal historical reasons, you gotta hang in there with these changes.

Either the programmers are reading our threads, or they noticed on their own that the <strike> tag didn't work. In any event, it seems to be working now. In my post on this thread at 2/21/09 10:26pm,
I wrote <strike>strikeout</strike>
and the result was <strike>strikeout</strike> (I noted "no go"). But now the same post displays:
Using "strike": <s>strikeout</s> (no go)
So now it's working - the "no go" has changed to a "go". But oddly, Sarastro, on 2/20/09 at 3:12pm did the same thing using an upper-case STRIKE, and got:
"... as we <STRIKE>speak</STRIKE> write"
So it seems that the "strike" tag only works in lower-case. In general, I don't think case is supposed to matter in tags, but this is a fine point. So just to try it all out:
Using <s>strikeout</s> gives <s>strikeout</s>
Using <strike>strikeout</strike> gives <strike>strikeout</strike>
Using <STRIKE>strikeout</STRIKE> gives <STRIKE>strikeout</STRIKE>
Of course, if they allow "STRIKE" (upper-case) in the future, this could change retroactively. I'll try to note all this on my web page, but it may take me a while to catch up with the changes.
I must say that I'm impressed with the work the programmers must be putting in to implement our suggestions. This has got to be a lot of work, but it's improving constantly. Transitions like this are always painful, but I think we'll be happy in the end.

Thanks for the feedback Larry--I'm slowly moving the feedback topics from other forums to this one. It's easier for the whole team to stay on top of them--so even if I'm the only "official" poster at least I can direct the group to this forum. I direct items to them still--but sometimes they spot them first and can fix them quickly.

Katie, Since I am the perp, I would be remiss not to chime back in and congratulate you and your colleagues for your good work. It is much better now and the old dog is beginning to get the hang of it. Thanks for being good listeners.

Bob, you--and others--should have fooled around with the new format before jumping in to complain. The new format is fine. It was fine on the first day too. It is just a learning experience--and, in my case, it didn't take much time at all.

Looking back up at my last entry of less than 11 hours ago, I see that the <STRIKE> tag, in upper-case, now works.
The site is evolving under our eyes!
Of course, it's not getting better by itself - there are programmers working to improve it. Thanks, programmers!
<s>Now for the next step with "strike"</s>... Strike that! I think we're thoroughly done with "strike" now.

Thanks Lauren, you must be a quick learner--I bet you did well in school. For me, the first day it was taking more than 30 seconds just to come up, but it learned to come up faster later on.

Christopher Little, how dare you call your own father a curmudgeon! To your room with you right this instant and no dinner until you apologize, young man!
Sir Bob, we cannot lose the last knighted member here. I am glad to see your photo on your profile. I am even happier to see you continuing to post right here.

Hey BC, I had forgottten the Knighthood--only the real old timers will remember. I hope you are doing well. Chris and family will be doing the Dolomites in June. We will be doing Venice, Dolomites, Bellagio for 3 weeks in Sep/Oct to celebrate our 50th.

You 50th??? You and Susan must have married when you were 12 and 10 years old!
Alas, the only trips on my calendar so far this year are Louisville next month to meet up with some friends, and Boston in October to go to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and enjoy some time with my friends out there. The cousins are clamoring for me to visit Montreal, but I'm going to have to think that one over....
I'll look forward to Chris' and Marisa's trip report, though, as well as yours. If I can't go myself right now (I'm back in school, preparing for "phase 3" of my career)I am certainly happy to live vicariously through the intrepid travels of 3 of my favorite Fodorites.
Best always,
BC
